Leicester City transfer news: Danny Drinkwater ‘very close’ to signing new contract

By James_Sharpe | Posted: August 18, 2016

Claudio Ranieri has confirmed that midfielder Danny Drinkwater is "very close" to signing a new contract at Leicester City.

Drinkwater is set to become the latest of City's title-tinning squad to sign a new deal following Riyad Mahrez, Jamie Vardy, Kasper Schmeichel, Wes Morgan and Andy King.

Drinkwater admitted last month that he would love to commit his future while reports this week claimed that City were set to offer the England midfielder a second £100,000-a-week offer after talks had stalled over an initial £80,000-a-week deal.

"I think Drinky is very, very close," said Ranieri. "I am very happy with him, he had a fantastic season.

"I am sure also he can improve, he is more confident, it is the only year he play all matches, he can increase his career here."

£100k a week?! Blimey.

Despite everything that happened last year, I will admit to still seeing us as "little Leicester", and these sums just seem mental.

Part of me thinks you could give them the world after what they did last season, and they're now being rewarded. But part of me can't help but feel that it was much more about the team last year, and these contracts are crazy.

It definitely changes the way I view success. Sure, we're still not close to competing with Man United, Man City, Chelsea etc money-wise and we can't expect to do that again on the pitch, but if we've got Mahrez, Vardy, Drinky on 100k a week I imagine we no longer have one of the smallest budgets in the league and expectations should be adjusted to that. We are, after all, partly paying for these contracts.

The same people saying it's £100k a week are the same people who were saying he's going and Mahrez is off to Arsenal.

They haven't got a ****ing Scooby about the figures on a contract.

What? Mahrez isn't going to Arsenal? but I read it on the internet.

He followed one of their reserves on twitter or that picture thing. There's only 3 possible reasons for following someone on tinternet stalking things...you're a stalker, they post nice pics of their scran or you're joining their football club.

He will have a very good chance of learning from Jaap Stam and maybe regain some confidence there. A good move for him.
