You've not included the cost of buying the car, insuring it, servicing it etc.

I'd want a lot more than a £7k rise if I had to drive that far to work. I'd also want to work fewer hours to make up for all the time on the road.

I did roughly that commute for most of last year (albeit not paid for by me) and I wouldnt recommend it as a long term solution. A year and I'd had enough.

Wouldn't go near a diesel if you are worried about cash, they are more expensive to buy and the difference in mpg is negated by price at the pumps.

If you're doing that mileage, comfort is a must, would agree with a passat sized motor. If serviced regularly most modern motors handle mileage no problem.

I can recommend a bloke who owns a garage and goes to auctions. Pay him £200 and he'll buy the motor for you, because he's a mechanic he knows what to look for and won't pay over the odds. PM me if you want his details.

i was assuming he already has a car so it was cost-neutral

but good point on servicing, Mrs DV drives Hinckley to Loughborough and back every day and spends a fortune on tyres

i'd ask about flexible working...compacted hours and/or working at home

Or it might just be a better job that he will enjoy more (or has better future prospects) so he is prepared to be worse off for it.
