Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel berated star left-back Ben Chilwell minutes after the Blues began their Carabao Cup clash with Aston Villa on Wednesday evening. The defender was making his first start of the season after falling behind Marcos Alonso in the Stamford Bridge pecking order.
Tuchel was out of his seat in the opening minutes of the match, according to
football.london, and took exception after Chilwell had played the 'wrong' pass.
Chilwell starred for Chelsea in the second half of last season after Tuchel took over from Frank Lampard in January.
He was an ever-present for the Blues in the Champions League from the quarter-final stages onwards and started the final as Chelsea defeated Manchester City to lift the trophy in May.
Chilwell was part of Gareth Southgate's England squad that reached the final of Euro 2020 but didn't make it onto the pitch during the tournament.
He had looked set to start the new season as Chelsea's undisputed left-back but, following his late return to Stamford Bridge after England's extended run, Chilwell found himself out in the cold.
Instead, Tuchel has turned to Spain international Alonso, who has begun the season in scintilating fashion.
Alonso has started all five of his side's Premier League games this season as Chelsea have stormed to the top of the table courtesy of four victories.
He also played in the Champions League win over Zenit St Petersburg last week.
In those six matches, Chelsea have conceded just one goal, while Alonso has also notched a goal and an assist at the other end of the pitch.
Chilwell will be incredibly disappointed to have fallen out of favour at Stamford Bridge after excelling last term.
But at 24 years old, he is six years younger than Alonso and is still viewed by many as the Blues' first-choice left-back for the long-term.
It remains to be seen whether Chilwell is happy to play second fiddle to Alonso and bide his time for an extended run of games or whether he will push for a move away from west London in January.
Last week, Tuchel addressed the issue of dropping Chilwell and explained that the player was suffering from a hangover of failing to play for England during the summer.
"When he arrived back, I felt him a bit mentally tired, like he was still worrying about the situation," Tuchel said.
"At the same time, he had to accept it - but he was very unlucky.
"Now because Marcos was here the whole pre-season, he did every single training session and he took this opportunity so great, with such a huge quality and attitude.
"Marcos was crucial for us from the first day in training and then he delivered in Chilly’s position. We have two specialists for the same position so it is a tough competition for both of them.
"We had some talks with Chilly about the situation. He knows that I would have done the same thing if it had been the other way round - to trust him if he was here and showed this kind of personality and attitude like Marcos did.
"They push each other and there are no further worries for Chilly. He has to be a bit patient and keep on training.
"It took some time - we had to give him a little bit of time to be a bit more patient with himself, to find the joy again and to find things a bit easier on the pitch and to not want to force it too hard.
"This is where we are now. Unfortunately, we only had three substitutes in the last matches in the Premier League otherwise we would have made him play some minutes, but he’s in the race now.
"The situation has changed for him - he’s in a good shape with his attitude and on the pitch so he can play any minute."
