Brilliant typo in the Mercury:

City were also linked with former caretaker-manager Nigel Worthington, now with Northern Ireland, and John Gregory, who intimidated he would have taken on Steve Walsh as his No.2 had he got the job.

:icon_lol:

Could be a very shrewd appointment but he does remind me a bit of Rob Kelly (who for the record never should have been sacked imo). He took over a Southampton side that was in dissaray and kept them up despite the fact that he was working in an environment so turbulant that working for Mandaric would have looked like a dream in comparison.

He did sorted out their dire defense, brought some decent players in and recognised what needed to be done. I think it would have been interesting to see what he could have done at Southampton given another year but in the three months he was there he did what was needed to keep that side up but he was let go pretty unfairly.

I think it is safe to say that he did a better job at Southampton than Holloway did with us and with the squad that he has available to him I think it will be very difficult for him not to succeed here. He was unfairly sacked by Southampton and I am sure that will give him the extra motivation required. Although there are managers I would have preferred I will be behind him 100% as long as he gets his head down and concentrates on the job which was the biggest problem I had with Martin Allen and Ian Holloway.

Ain't my money dude so I don't really give a toss how much the players are signed for and/or paid as whatever it is it's too much for kicking a ball around.

Will he be a flop - tell you in four months time….

Tell you what, we could a competition between Ernie and DJ (if he stays) on who gets most goals, don't reckon we'll get to 10 between them. :102:

Not your money? Are you a freeloader then?

Hopefully he will instill some discipline to the bunch of loafers we've got.

I will get behind him :thumbs_up

Hi mate, bit worried about the thumbs up, where are you going to put it? :102: :icon_lol:

Are you going to put your back into supporting him then?

Bang on there, h_s.

We should have kept Kelly, he'd have then got us got relegated that season, sacked him, hired somebody decent, spent the season just gone getting promoted and we'd now be looking forward to a season in the Championship.

Love your thinking.

Cue someone telling you we already had enough points to stay up when we sacked him. I wouldn't do it myself though. :icon_bigg :icon_wink

Nigel Worthington's record was no better than Rob Kelly's and he did nothing to improve our team. He didn't do a bad job considering the dire situation we were in and I don't think he would have done as badly or squandered as much money as our managers did last season either. He is also probably the last manager Leicester manager to make a successful signing in Gareth Mcauley.

Dear oh dear.

One can only presume that you don't get to games very often and failed to see Kelly's run of form at the end. He couldn't buy a win.

For what it was worth, Worthington came in and did enough to keep Championship status - something Kelly would not have achieved, Wikipedia managerial stat record or no.

We would have stayed up with the points Kelly got us actually.

Roll on the start of the season and those mouth watering div 1 fixtures, only then can he truely prove how good or crap a decision it is. However, i think there is some (very small) reassurances in that there is a Southampton link with chief executive Lee Hoos, and he obviously believes Pearson can do a job for us - lets hope Hoos knows something that we don't.

I did go to a lot of the games towards the end of that season. Kelly had an awful home record but we did manage to get a few wins away from home. We were arguably even worse at home under Nigel Worthington including a loss to a poor Norwich side and we got two 1-0 away wins against Barnsley and Preston who were both struggling as we were and neither win was convincing (I was at both games).

The Preston game we won late in the game and the Barnsley result was due to one of the luckiest goals I have ever seen and Barnsley could have easily have beaten us if they hadn't have wasted the numerous good chances we allowed them to have.

I'm not trying to say that Worthington did a bad job because he did keep us up but he really didn't do much better than Rob Kelly. At the time we had such a thin squad to the point were we were wondering how we would even be able to field a team whenever anyone picked up an injury! I think if either Worthington or Kelly had the opprtunity to be able to spend some money in the summer I don't think either have failed as monumentally as the managers who followed them did.

I thought Worthington was in charge for the Barnsley game, amazing the tricks the mind plays on you.
