This is probably a mistake on their part.

Contrary to received wisdom managers are usually not sacked early enough. A manager needs to have a close season and then be judged before Christmas. It does not take long to tell whether anyone is good in a job. Leicester got it right by sacking Martin Allen quickly. They might have been relegated in 2010-2011 if they had not sacked Paulo Sousa. On the other hand they were not ruthless enough with Pater Taylor.

Nigel Clough was the longest serving manager in the Championship so clearly the board thought he was doing a good job. Now they say they want to go to the next level. They should ask Nigel Clough how to get to that next level; he is the man who knows the club and the players.

It is, of course, possible the replacement will be better than Nigel Clough but the odds are against it. Nigel Clough has been sacked after three defeats. All credit to Vichai and Top who held their nerve during our bad run last year.

Rumours of Pulis already, that would be the worst possible appointment given the style and players Clough has installed there.

I don't know which I find funnier; the news that Clough has been sacked or the fact that the shaggers are floating aimlessly without a rudder.

Terrible decision IMO. It looked like Nigel was slowly building a decent squad... Maybe I'm wrong but in the first year he was managing them didn't we win 4-0 and 0-2? And we've not won by more than a 1-goal margin in the last couple of years.

Terrible decision, but more importantly, woo! Have it.

Totally agree. He's not really had the resources to build a squad that anyone would expect to be in the top 6 and yet has made Derby into a team which certainly competes at this level. Incredibly harsh to sack him after a narrow defeat away to their local rivals and if you look at who they've dropped points to recently, there's no games where you would expect Derby to be coming away with all 3 points. Mind boggling decision I feel and I'm sure the majority of Derby fans will agree.

I'm sure a lot of their fans will be happy with him.

I used to work with a Derby fan who said the success they had when Jim Smith was manager was mainly due to McLaren's coaching.

I'm sure the ex Forest connection may have undone some of that.
