Just out of interest, does anyonewho's been looking at these tables know what the typical minimum number of points has been to get automatic promotion over recent years (ie one point more than 3rd place rather than the number of points 2nd place teams actually achieved)?

I looked into it a couple of months ago but can't remember if I posted the numbers. I think I decided it varied so much it was pointless using past tables to calculate what we need,

Quite. As a means of setting targets, the only time and point for it would be at the start of the season when you might look at the highest and average. Now it's irrelevant, but mildly interesting.

I think you are slipping into straw clutching territory here!

2007/08 - 3rd place = 80 points
2006/07 - 3rd place = 83 points
2005/06 - 3rd place = 76 points
2004/05 - 3rd place = 79 points
2003/04 - 3rd place = 82 points
2002/03 - 3rd place = 83 points
2001/02 - 3rd place = 83 points
2000/01 - 3rd place = 86 points
1999/2000 - 3rd place = 85 points
1998/99 - 3rd place = 82 points

Average 3rd place points = 81.9

So, using this statistic I guess 82 points will do.

82 points would have only been enough in three of those ten seasons. If we are using nonsense like this to set a target we should be trying to beat the highest third placed team's total, not an average that was only enough 30% of the time!

So 82 points should just about do it. 7 points to go then. That's either 2 wins and a draw, or one win and four draws or seven draws.

Out of interest, say we were to achieve only 11 more points this season, would you prefer to achieve these by winning three, drawing two, and losing six, OR winning one, drawing eight and losing two OR drawing 11?

*searches for ignore function*

As long as we keep putting points on the board I don't really care how we play. None of the teams below us look like they're good enough to put a run on that will challenge us and for us to fail now there'd have to be two teams that go on such a run.

Thanks for that, Joe. Taking the top figure would suggest 87 points needed - reasonably close to what extrapolations by Desert and Granite Foxes suggest.

Which is slightly over a point a game.

We need 1.0909090909090909090909090909091ish points per game from now until the end of the season to achieve promotion.

I think we should aim to go unbeaten for at least another 4 months.

Feck me we've lost 3 matches all year in the league and were wondering if we'll scrape over the line. Surely the faith we've given nige so far should continue and we shouldn't be doubting what points we need to go up. Were up already imo. Just not mathmatically yet but we will soon. chill out guys and gals and enjoy the whalloping we'll give to allen and hammond tomorrow.

If were not on 90 points by the time the leeds match comes along then i'll eat my fecking hat. and i love my hat!
