CITY SIGN NEWTON

08:05 - 06 July 2007

Shaun Newton today became Leicester City manager Martin Allen's 10th signing.

Newton, who played for City on loan at the end of last season, was out of contract at West Ham and has signed a one year deal.

For full story see today's Leicester Mercury.

Squad player - which we need! Good turn of speed. Not going to get a place ahead of Kaabi though!

It will be a luxury to have a choice of two half decent right-sided midfielders (assuming Kaebi plays there and is half decent).

Better than a choice between Maybury and Low at least. So this is progress.

With Kaabi a bit of an unknown quantity and with him travelling the world regularly for Iran matches, we did need another right midfielder. Newton did well on loan, he can cover the centre midfield too and is solid, experienced addition. Pleased with this one.

Need left mid, left back and forward and squad is complete.

Doesn't do it for me, I'm afraid - I can only assume we've signed him as back up in case Kaebi turns out to be a duffer

On the bench at best

I think building a decent squad is vital if we want to be successful. Newton fits into that mould of being a squad player, and will prove to be adequate enough. He proved last season he can still perform.

Not really fussed by this signing, doubt he will be on a huge salary, so I'm happy with him being a substitue midfielder.

I think hes a solid signing. He did quite well for us when he applied himself.

Agreed

I was impressed with him - when he put his mind to it.

For example, his two second half performance against Brum and Barnsley.

Still need a couple of left-side players, a striker and a creative midfielder. Quite possibly another midfielder too.

Why did we sign Jonathan Hayes if we were going to do this ??

Why did we sign Jonathan Hayes if we were going to do this ??

Jonathan Hayes is young and will probably be more first choice, however Newton can play down both wings if needed, is older (not sure how old though) and at best will be cover. People were saying how we needed depth in midfield, and I think players like this will provide good, if uninspirational, cover.

Maybe Kaebi is going to play right back like he does for Iran, and Chambers left back? Doubt it, but we've seen more ridiculous shoe-horning of teams in recent years...
