I mean he never really stood out to me apart from when he played in league one so I wouldn't mind him going but anyway he is considering retirement?

He was our best midfielder in the final 2 or 3 months of last season imo. Looked far better playing as a defensive midfielder than he ever did as a central midfielder.

I wonder whether he will apply for the first team coaching role recently vacant

Why would he do that when he already has a much more lucrative playing contract?

I don't think I've ever knowingly heard a Take That song in my entire life.

I'd be surprised if one had never reached your ears though. Aside from insipid cover versions of previously merely shit songs that they turned to utter wank, they're actually not terrible for what they are.

Certainly blew Chesney Hawkes and Dannii Minogue off the stage when I saw them at the American Adventure back in the day.

Oh, I don't doubt that I've probably heard several on adverts, at events or in the background at some shop or pub or anything, but I couldn't tell you if you that a song was a Take That song if I heard one. Same with a lot of popular artists, actually.

I guess not listening to the radio or music tv and having parents who didn't listen to the radio or watch music tv growing up and getting all my music tastes from niche internet sites and some studenty-type friends did that to me. I have absolutely no idea what is going on or who the big artists or what the big songs are in the mainstream music scene today and don't think I ever have done really at any point in my life.

Yep, more or less exactly the same as me. I could pick out voices of a few mainstream artists, even 2011 chart artists, but I was put off mainstream music when all the people around me were talking about Oasis and a million other bands that sounded exactly the same to my ears. I went looking for something else because, frankly, there was no chance I was ever going to allow myself to become one of those ****ing douchebags who hear an identikit drums-n-guitar-n-whiny vocals song from some Oasis replica and base their entire lives around becoming a replica of a replica.

I'd sooner kill myself than be in a band with long hair and tight jeans and stupid ****ing pretentious goatee beards, pretending to still be a proper lad by professing allegiance to a football team I never watch and telling stories about getting shitfaced and shagging whores all the time.

I ****ing hate people.

Rant over.

:038: Couldn't agree more! There are few things that I hate more than men who go on about being "proper lads" and boast about how they get shitfaced or what drugs they take and endlessly try to put forward a macho image. Especially the ones who try to make out how working class and hard their upbringing was, when they're some white, heterosexual, skinny kid with rich parents. Absolutely hate all those "laddish" indie type bands like Oasis, the Libertines, Kasabian etc.

Excuse me while I take the bait.

Get over yourself Prof, your sounding like an inverted snob. I appreciate you have your own particular taste in music as you have mentioned it before. In my eyes and ears the Libertines have produced truly great music. Most people I know who are unaware of this just read the headlines and make judgement them through Mr Doherty’s exploits.

One of the best live acts to come out of Britain in a long time A shame they never fulfilled their early potential, all due to Mr. P Docherty and his self destructive nature.

Back to football anyone.

Indeed. I find myself to be a fairly enlightened dude when it comes to music, film, tv etc. And God knows I've dished out a few bollockings to people for enjoying what I consider shit but you pair appear to have disappeared up your own arses.

I respect both of you...but when the unshowered masses singalong to wonderwall that doesn't make it anything less than a little pop masterpiece.

We can have this chat elsewhere by all means.

Fecking hell can we get back to arguing about football...it's been a war of attrition this preseason!

Can't see Oakley leaving to be honest...but on the other hand Sven has said he'd like to move on some fringe players.

I stand by what I said. Oasis were clearly a very good act, but the reason I mentioned them was because they appeared to pave the way for a million bands as described above. It's slightly different now of course. Mainstream acts now appear to be either that band of scruffy 6-stone douchebags with skinny jeans and shit hair, a terrible "RnB" act who do nothing resembling "RnB" and are in fact a terrible hip-hop act, or a rapper not fit to test B-Real's microphone spitting the same tired old bullshit we've got used to about asses n bling.
