Again, I'm not saying I agree with it, but I was under the impression we live in some semblance of democracy and was just defending the right to express our opinions freely.

I completely agree

And my freely expressed opinion is that those who boo their own players before they have kicked a feckin' ball are bordering on the mentally ill

Or am I not allowed to say such a thing in your concept of democracy ?

Is it okay to Boo England players???:icon_conf

Sorry to remind everyone of last night.

No one was booing them before they had actually kicked off

After the pitiful display they subsequently put on, then I would have thought that booing them was compulsory after the final whistle

If Gary Nevile had been playing I would have booed him before kick off.

He never sings the National Anthem the unpatriotic git

Neither do I.

I couldn't give a flying fcuk whether our Queen lives or dies, so it would be hypocritical to sing a song about saving her

My memory of it was that for the first couple of corners he took he was loudly booed, with no hint of irony at all. Fortunately, from then on when ever he came down toward the cop end he was clapped by a increasing number of the crowd.

If you are a visiting player and you get booed - it's generally a massive complement (less so of course, if you are a home player!). There was a time when top visiting players were more appreciated. But that was a different age.

I've been around a bit - and I have a sneeking feeling that our crowd is traditionally just a bit more resentful of former players and former managers than most.

I associate singing the national anthem with representing your country and being proud to be English. Whether you like the queen or not doesnt come into it for me.

I have always sung "God Save Our Team"

The rest of the verses don't quite fit, but it's an adequate compromise for any self-respecting republican such as myself

Really?, you are obviously more of a music man than a lyric man.

To me lyrics are very important, and that song doesn't mention our country once, yet it mentions the Queen on lots of occasions.

Not for me

Dear Land of Hope, thy hope is crowned.
God make thee mightier yet!
On Sov'ran brows, beloved, renowned,
Once more thy crown is set.
Thine equal laws, by Freedom gained,
Have ruled thee well and long;
By Freedom gained, by Truth maintained,
Thine Empire shall be strong.

Land of Hope and Glory, Mother of the Free,
How shall we extol thee, who are born of thee?
Wider still and wider shall thy bounds be set;
God, who made thee mighty, make thee mightier yet.
God, who made thee mighty, make thee mightier yet.

Thy fame is ancient as the days,
As Ocean large and wide:
A pride that dares, and heeds not praise,
A stern and silent pride:
Not that false joy that dreams content
With what our sires have won;
The blood a hero sire hath spent
Still nerves a hero son.

Always liked the tune, very stirring but not too sure about those two lines.

Always rather liked this one from WW1

None shall attack
The Union Jack
None shall defile the Crown
We will defend the Empire too
And every other pub in town

Feck me, you really are old

Some would argue that the Queen is "England", as she represents the head of the country. Therefore by singing god save our queen you are actually singing god save our country. Maybe thats just me reading to much into the lyrics? :102:

No, lyrics are there to be interpreted how you like.

TBH, that's not a bad philosophy on the National Anthem and an angle I never viewed it from.

Except that it is the national anthem for Great Britain, rather than England......
