Its best to let your tank stand for a week with everything running and with out fish ,so that it can build up the Bactria before you add your fish.

that's what i was told when i first set up our tropical tank ,marine is the same but 2-3 months
Whoever told you that is a first class ****.

You can leave it a week for the chlorine to leave the water, but it never takes that long as it's so unstable.

The bacteria need a source of ammonia, unless you add ammonium sulphate (or similar) to the aquarium, you will need to add fish.

:icon_redf Sorry ,the bit i forgot to add was get someone with a set up to add some of their medium from their filter into yours then run it :icon_redf
That's perfect, but only if you trust the person isn't going to introduce a disease into your tank.

That method also requires good timing to ensure the fish go in straight away, and not allow the bacteria to die off. But you are spot on.

Found one of my Neons dead today :icon_sad: Anothers not looking too clever.

Ive lost a few recently including my albino plecko. Gonna do a partial water change at the weekend and give the filters a bit of an overhaul, see if that helps.

the ill looking ones perked up this morning. Ive read that neons are being poorly bred and are renowned for being very weak lately.

i replaced my filter cartridge yesterday and did a 30% change but ba lot of people seem to advocate 'washing' the filter sponge in old tank water rather than chaging it even though the manual for my filter says not to :icon_conf

Ive been told you should never replace or clean the filters in your pump other than rinsing them in old tank water. My mum used to wash them with washing up liquid and bleach the tank, which was why I thought it may be time for me to take it on!

I've also heard that neon stocks suffer from inbreeding depression, and I've always had poor viability from them.

Cardinals seem to fare much better though. I've had very few fatalities in the shoal I keep now.

I have a few different types of tetras and they have all lasted longer than the neons. So I would say ive had similar experiences.

My tank demands a replacement filter every 4-6 weeks. I will see how it goes.
