id happily take 2million for Mattock to be perfectly honest, though this is Roy Keane, we can probably negotiate him to pay a lot, lot more

I can understand the calls to keep Mattock after all he does have potential, England U21 involvement, don't want to be a selling club, must nuture our own talent etc...

But at 19 years of age IMO and pretty much two full season's of first team involvement I don't believe he has shown the kind of form to justify such a price tag. Turn it around and I would be devastated if we paid £2m for Mattock based on his career to date, and I really don't see him becoming anymore than an average premiership player at best. We are fast approaching the point where Mattock's value will start to decline if the potential does not develop into performance. Look how Joachim levelled out and we failed to capaitalise.

IMO Mattock wasn't even the best left back in our squad let alone league one, unlike Morrison and Hobbs who gre in stature and looked quality in many games, Mattock was far from being a class above and too be honest I doubt he will be a stand out player in the Championship next season.

IMO now is the time to cash in, we have a manager and scouting network who we can have confidence and trust to invest the money wisely and improve the squad.

Agree 100%, plus he could get injured at any point a la Matty Piper who showed far more potential than Mattock ever has imo, as do, like you say, Hobbs and Morrison. I reckon we should cash in why theres still hype surrounding him.

Hasn't Andy King progressed more this season? :102:

Hobbs, Morrison, Gradel and King all show more potential and more determination to reach their potential than Mattock for me

Nicky Shorey is an average premiership player and Villa paid 5 odd million for him.
Mattock becoming a average premiership player would be a good thing!

Especially as a Left back, an English one at that.

Shorey played for England and was signed off the back of a very good season with Reading in the prem, where as Mattock was distinctly average in a side that convincingly won a mediocre league one.....hardly a comparison IMO

How are people judging his potential? He might have already reached it for all we know.
Also how are people judging his desire to achieve this potential? Just so I can make my own judgements is all.

True, but mattocks played for England at every level other than full at 19 years old. The 2nd youngest player to get an England under 21 cap and is clearly seen by quite a few managers as having the potential to be a very good left back.

Maybe a bad comparsion - but my point was that average premiership players offen go for a lot of money. Players with the potential of Mattock could go for the same.

All fair points but what I was merely stating was that £2m for a player whom has potential but at present has only proven himself to be an average league one left back is perhaps to good an offer to refuse. IMO Mattock is nowhere near as good as Lewington at present and I would imagine we could more than replace Mattock for a fraction of the price we would recieve.

And I assume that if any sale took place, Mattock's 'potential' would be reinforced by Pearson/Hoos ensuring a substantial sell on clause in the deal.
