I think a lot of opinions on Beckford are being affected by his price tag, history and his horrendous first few performances.

Since West Ham I don't think he's done a whole lot wong. Had he been in a better performing side he might have had a few more goals to his name.

Completely agree. I'm rather worried by these rumours circulating that he might be sold in Jan.

That's enough of your complete nonsense, thank you very much

We all know the way forward is Howard and Waghorn up front, being supplied by Super Richie Wellens through the middle, and Lloyd Dyer on the wing

How could that possibly fail ?

Reading these pages must have educated me (well, just a little): I find myself agreeing with you, almost all the time, these days!

The magic formula!!

He's hardly set the world alight at Hull. I know he's been injured but he scored only 1 goal in 5 appearances. Hardly the type of form to merit an instant recall into the starting line up. Now I know Beckford has struggled to settle but I think he's shown a lot of promise in recent weeks and I think it's definitely worth persisting with him rather than rocking the boat again.

Who said he would get straight back in the team? He said he's still in his plans, which I would expect him to say about any player anyway. You never know when someone will be needed, so there is no need to say anything other than that.

You make excuses for Beckfords lack of goals and taking time to settle, but use Waghorns 1 in 5 as a stick to beat him with. What has Beckford got 2 or 3 in about 15 games? Seems fairly comparable to Waghorn.

I'm not a huge fan, but there is nothing wrong with the lad getting another crack at it here just to see if he still have the promise of a year or so ago. There is no reason both of them can't be in the match day squad, it shouldn't just be a case of either or.

The fact he used the word definitely in there. I never said he would waltz straight back in but I wouldn't surprised if he doesn't find himself higher up the pecking order than Beckford. I'm using his 1 in 5 to demonstrate that even though Pearson took him to Hull he still couldn't improve his form so there's nothing to suggest that he will slot back into this team and start scoring again. If he had improved at Hull it would be a different story but he hasn't. Beckford has shown real signs of improvement for me in the past few weeks and he's been extremely unlucky to not score for us. I'm happy for Waghorn to get a chance and would prefer him to be ahead of Howard, but I'm sorry if we're looking for another striker to fire us up the league it is not Waghorn. We have enough resources to get in a striker of a higher calibre in January if need be even if it is on loan. We shouldn't be just trying to reassemble a team we used 2 years ago that weren't good enough to get promoted then, even with high confidence following a promotion the season before. It will end in disaster and we'll start slipping further and further away from the pay offs.

Blimey you're a bit harsh. He was only there for 5 games, I wouldn't expect anyone to suddenly turn up and be amazing. It took Beckford 8 games before he even started running about a bit!

It's all very well to say we have the resources to splash out on better, but in reality there are other areas that need sorting with any available cash first. If Beckford is as good as you seem to think he might be, then Waghorn (if he can discover previous form) is ok back up.

I agree we need to address the midfield first, however, I do think we need perhaps another striker and I'd like to see us go back in for Maynard in Jan. I'm just concerned that Pearson is looking to go backward before moving forward and I don't think that's wise. I think Waghorn is an ok back up I'm just a little concerned about how enthusiastic Pearson is about him. True 5 games isn't a great amount of game time but that's also one of the reasons why I'm not unfurling the banners for his return.

It just seems to me that Pearson is looking to reassemble the 2009 team and then move on from there. I don't think that's the way to move forward. Yes all the players should be given the chance to perform and have the opportunity to impress but he hasn't said anything like that about Fernandes, Abe et al.

I don't for one minute think Pearson would try and reassemble any team. There are currently 8 members in existance from 2009 and he has only regularly played 4 of those. I think people are too obsessed with the notion that Pearson favours his old guard. I would say it is more a case of the remaining players being substandard.

I think he definitely does favour his old guard. Highlighted by the fact he has refused to experiment with the midfield at all. The others would raise serious question marks if they were brought back in. Howard's start at the weekend was laughable.

Was Howards performance laughable?

Although he set up one goal I don't think he did much and his inclusion meant a long ball approach which effectively cost us 3 points.

His nudged pass for our goal was joyous rather than laughable, I'd say.
It was a good ball, I'll take my hat off to that. I just think it's irrelevant when you concede two and come home with nothing. I think his inclusion in a starting 11 means a predictable long ball approach and a lack of ideas from the management. Any team with an organised back line should be able to deal with that.

Not really. I can't claim to have watched the game but by all accounts Howard was one of our better performers. His inclusion is not laughable at all but because he is now probably better suited to the impact substitute role the fact that he started indicates limited options. You say that you would like to see us go back in for Maynard. To be honest I fear that you have lost touch with reality on the feasible. It appears certain that Maynard doesn't want to sign for us; he didn't in the last transfer window and I guess he's even less likely to now that our prospects of gaining promotion this season have considerably dimmed. The guy wants to play in the Premier League asap and I guess he will sign for one of the strugglers or potential strugglers in that league.

Why do you think he didn't want to sign for us? because he didn't throw his dummy out the pram? He ultimately didn't sign because Bristol didn't accept our offer, we never got the chance to negotiate terms so we don't know whether or not he would have signed. I'm not saying we'd get him but I'd like to see us make an attempt. Bristol are far more likely to accept a bid now otherwise they will lose him for nothing in the summer.

Howard should only be used as an impact sub at this level, to put him in front of Beckford and Schlupp in the starting 11 is ludicrous and I think it cost us at least a point. We have the options there but Pearson decided not to go for them.

I believe that Maynard thinks he can do better than join us. One of the big problems that faced Sven and will now confront Pearson is that it is very difficult to attract the players that are our first choice signings. My take is that situation led to Sven signing second, third and maybe fourth choices which was fair enough - except that he seems to have paid well over the odds to get their signatures.
