Radio 1 & AV Forums podcasts are all mp3 files. I think you will find nearly all of them are simple mp3's that any media software can play.

I'm a music purist. It shouldn't be listened to on piss pot ear or head phones.

Besides, when can I listen to fukking headphones. If I'm out of the house, I'm usually doing something that can't involve headphones.

Portable music devices are the scurge of society, it ruins social interaction, it ruins the peace and quiet, it removes brain cells, people try and interact with you numpties in shops but might as well talk to a brick wall, you fukkers also wander across the road in front of my car. Tossers

If I'm in the house, I have wifi in every room, I don't need a fukking pod in my ear

The headphones are crap you get with them, but you can buy better ones which improve the sound quality. My biggest gripe with them is the volume level, needs to be much higher than it is. Rory Gallagher has to be loud by default....

Its still an excuse not to fork cash out I think.....:icon_bigg

Yes, but they're still podcasts. You still need podcast software to download them. If you can't subscribe to a feed, what you're getting isn't a podcast.

I dont have an mp3 player because i dont need one. If im not at home where I can listen to music in most rooms then i am in my car where i have the radio and a cd changer and a very nice bose sound system. Why would i want my music piped into my head through some bits of plastic when i can have the volume up very loud in the car. Or Im at work where we dont have any music on and I spend half of my life on the phone.

well you can play an ipod through the sound system in your car, then you can carry all your CDs with you on your travels, and not be restricted to 10 CDs in your changer....

its actually only a six cd changer.:icon_redf but I get your point but I would have to use one of those fm frequnecy thingys to get an Ipod to play on my stereo I think unless I get a new headunit which i am planning to do in the next 12 months.

i've got one of those - not greatly impressed with the quality - but then for £6 off ebay what do you expect?

So if I download a "podcast" by right clicking a link, saving the resulting mp3 to my hard drive, and listening to it in my chosen media player, which is Real Player (although I do have Quick Time as well), am I missing out on some added features, or is it just a semantics thing - it's no longer a "podcast", but the content is the same?

(example of above right-click-download-mp3 deal is http://www.baddielandskinner.com/podcast/download.php)

I'm not having a go - I haven't listened to the podcast yet but I will (so I might have a go later! :icon_bigg ), but I'd genuinely like to know if there's a benefit, being, as I am, an ignoramus.

There isn't the option to Right Click and save as mp3. It just saves as an .htm file

If you click the link, it tries to install quick time.

I can't find an mp3 on the site anywhere.

At the end of the day to get the podcast you will need podcasting software.the whole point of podcasting is to eliminate such annoyances for both the provider and the consumer.
forget the term podcast, what you're doing is providing a sound file for people to download & listen to, end of story.

The fact that you can wrap it up in an XML file so that people can sync it up with their iPod is an extra convenience, it's not the whole point of the exercise.

surely it should be about making it accessable, not about using technology for the sake of it.

I don't know of any examples of podcasters providing files as you say.
well here's two good examples:

hungbunny
Baddeil & Skinner

Please don't get me wrong I'm not having a go here, I applaud you for doing this in the first place & I hope you take this onboard as constructive feedback.
