Presumably you could just walk straight down Barrow Road and under the A6. Looking at Streetmap, it looks like a walk of about 1½ miles.

You might be right. I am only making the assumption over the A6 from always being in the position of a car.

The last direct train from Barrow to Leicester is just after 8PM

And if you miss that there's a later one if you change at Loughborough.
