But we can only sign players on loan at the moment. He is quite obviously a short term fix as cover until the end of the season. Seems eminently sensible to me, and will not cost us a great deal in terms of wages.

I don't really want to argue this one anymore. But one thing is obvious and that is that we are short of players - full stop. Unfortunately there is rarely much joy with this type of very short termism with a player whose motivation must be questionable - given the overall circs.

Agreed, but we are in a bit of a hole, in that we cannot sign anyone long term at the moment, and to be fair, more players are availlable in the close season. I think it was possibly the only option we had.

RK can sign who the feck he wants imo....He's got his reasons and that's ok with me. :038:

I wasnt having a go Stevo, all I was trying to say is that we dont really know all the circumstances behind this move, Kelly may well have targetted a number of left backs that were not available or affordable. I just feel that there is a hell of a lot of negativity being posted and IMO it is unjust and unwarranted.

I know. :icon_wink ;)

exactly. nothing to lose with a bit of cover and experience. if it doesn't work out there's no harm done.

I suppose we have all forgotten the last time that Brevett appeared at the Walkers:

LONDON, Aug 7 (Reuters) - Former England striker Dion Dublin was sent off after only 18 minutes of his Leicester City debut in a 0-0 draw with fellow English second division title favourites West Ham United on Saturday.
Leeds United, like Leicester relegated from the premier league in May, began their attempt to climb straight back into the top flight with a 1-0 home win over Derby County on the opening day of the English league season.
Dublin, who joined Leicester as a free agent after being released by premier league Aston Villa last season, was dismissed for violent conduct after a clash with West Ham's Rufus Brevett, who was booked.

Brevett, lucky not to be sent off with Dublin, was shown the red card five minutes from time after a second booking for a late tackle on James Scowcroft.

isn't it end of Feb when the one match ban for cards accrued is scrapped?
(unless players are on 10 yellows or something)

have they changed this from previous years then?

One match suspension for 5 yellows finishes on the last day of February;
after that players will be "warned as to future conduct".

Two match suspension for 10 yellows finishes on the second Sunday in April; after that players will be "severely censured and warned as to future conduct".

Three match suspension for 15 yellows at any time during the season.

Players getting 20 yellows at any time during the season have to attend a meeting and will be dealt with "in such a manner as the members of the Disciplinary Commission see fit". Same for mutiples of 5 after that (how many yellows is it possible to get in a season?)

Seems ok to me, short term cover in a position we are short, we dont need someone who can bomb forward just defend and play it simple.

A few people said alan wright would have been a crap signing but century reckon he was man of the match for derby, so we may get lucky too.

Exactly Lboro, he is a left sided specialist full back, which may actually allow Smith to play with a little less empahasis on defence, which could see a return to the best form of young Ryan, which could be a massive plus over the next few weeks.

That's *if* young Ryan can be arsed. We still don't know why he was leaving Portman Road before the game and it doesn;t seem that he has been willing to put much effort in recently.

I agree with you there Boc, but I think play a natural left back and it may allow Smith to play his natural game, whilst his attitude has been poor, after watching his early displays, I do believe that the under Levein, he was somewhat nullified and forced to adopt a defensive and negative approach to his game. I certainly dont believe his game has benefitted from his loan spell with us, but I also believe that his attitude has also shown that maybe Ryan doesnt have what is necessary to make it to the very top in the game.

More importantly his passing, crossing and shooting will mean he wont make to the top IMO.

I think he has gone backwards as a player with us. I am also certain that he will turn out to be as good as Bentley for example. :icon_wink ;)

Well maybe he should start being arsed. Perhaps someone should show him the tape from Arsenals game against Madrid. It might dawn on him when he realises he ain't going to walk into the gunners side any day soon.

And I agree with every word of that too.

That's nice!

TBH I think Ryan Smith is a liability for our club in it's current conundrums. He is clearly a gifted player with bags of skill, but this really is a luxury at present when we dearly need solid gritt and determination to get out of this mess. Muzzy Izzet was a 'great' when he was paired with Lennon and McKinlay (why we ever sold him is still a mystery to me...) I hope that with the benefit of Brevitt we may yet see the Ryan Smith we all want to see more of. No manager in his right mind would consider playing Smith at the momennt unless they were sure they had a solid left back to give him the room to roam.

While I agree that Smith is a luxury player I wouldn't say that he doesn't care or put effort in as some have said/implied. I don't have the exact quote with me but in the January Fox Levein said that Ryan was always coming up to him and apologising for his performances, saying that he should have done better etc. If anything I'd say that Smith is feeling frustrated about Levein getting the sack as he seemed to get on very well with him and perhaps feels responsible. There is my cod psychology anyway. It would still show a bit of an attitude problem from him (as the club pay his wages, not Levein) however more from naivety than being a 'big time Charlie'.
