In America they call them 'Hail Mary' passes.

Just how Jebus' mum could help in a sporting environment is a mystery.
It's called a 'Hail Mary' pass because in desperation the quarterback tosses the ball as high and as far as possible and then prays that a miracle occurs (i.e., a score).

Every pass and I mean every pass was an outside of the boot 30 yard pass to the opposition. So he attempted a Hollywood pass (in the glamour and style context) but without actually achieving it.

I think technically, the Hollywood pass has to look good and be attempted by a player who also looks good. I guess "Beckhamesque" is a variant, but now Mark Lawrenson uses Hollywood as an adjective to describe anything rubbish attempted by the England team, it's getting overused in a slightly different context. :icon_conf

Aha, so Lawrenson is behind this?

That explains why I've never heard this before and why it makes no ****ing sense whatsoever

Thanks lazz. I'm still a bit confused as to why he didn't just say that he was crap at passing the the ball, but there you go.

Hollywood ball means a crap pass, if anybody else is confused by this bizarre expression. The easy way to remember it is that Hollywood makes crap films.

More crap long pass really, especially when trying for a through ball that isn't on. Think of it as an attempt at glamour, just as Hollywood attempts at glamour.

Little bit at the end of this merc article about it

Meanwhile, mystery surrounds the future of Nolberto Solano after reports in Hull said he was set to go on trial with City's Championship rivals.
The 35-year-old was offered a new six-month contract in May and it was widely reported he had signed, but sources in Hull say Nigel Pearson has offered the Peruvian a trial.
City officially refused to comment last night.

I prefer to think that Hollywood makes long crap films

You can understand why Robin Friday kicked him in the face and took a dump in his kit bag.

He's my hero.
In fact, I spend every Friday stealing anything I can get my hands on in his memory

Confirmed on the BBC that Solano and James Harper will be training with Hull this week. Strange considering Pearson offered him a contract this summer, why would he need to see him again, but it looks like Nobby may be off, bye then

He will probably still need to pass a Hull medical. See how many pies he can eat etc.
