You have to like hot weather I think. For some people it's too dry and not green enough. But I love it! Tucson is a particularly good city IMO; all the convenience of a major city but about as busy as Market Harborough and surrounded by lush Sonoran desertscrub and mountains three times the height of Ben Nevis.

So I'd definitely recommend Tucson, or anywhere else in southeast Arizona, but I wouldn't recommend Phoenix which is an even hotter, very big (now the 5th largest city in the US, over 4 milllion people), very smelly, smoggy, over-commercialised dust bowl 100 miles to the north. Full of idiots (down here we call them "Republicans") who have turned the place into something that looks like where they have all moved from, which is the East coast and Mid-West, but with nice weather. You can hardly tell you're in the desert as certain parts look like Anytown, USA. Wankers! Tucson is a lot more funky and liberal, with a traditional Spanish feel on the whole.

Most certainly worth a visit at the very least. Lots to see and do, nice weather almost guaranteed. :icon_cool

Sounds ideal. I intend to spend a few years living in America at some point (not sure how or worked out the logistics, just figure I'll work something out ;) ) so weighing up places. The missus is so far intent on New York, which I also do love

I think i'll be visiting in October. My missus has a house near 4th ave.

She really loves the place and misses it a lot.

little fluffy clouds...

:)

you heard that song Desert?

Thought the Orb was in the sky.

Is that The Orb?

yes, it's based on a interview with some singer from Arizona and it goes:-

Interviewer: "What were the skies like when you were young?"

Jones: "They went on forever – They - When I w- We lived in Arizona, and the skies always had little fluffy clouds in 'em, and, uh... they were long... and clear and... there were lots of stars at night. And, uh, when it would rain, it would all turn - it- They were beautiful, the most beautiful skies as a matter of fact. Um, the sunsets were purple and red and yellow and on fire, and the clouds would catch the colors everywhere. That's uh, neat cause I used to look at them all the time, when I was little. You don't see that. You might still see them in the desert."

Ricky Lee Jones, methinks.

It was the tune that got me into electronic music, which is pretty much still the sort of thing I listen to now.

I was going to quote a bit of that with the photo but didn't know how many people would get it. It didn't cross my mind until I'd been here for a few weeks, but there's a certain irony to it all, my moving out here, enjoying the sunsets and monsoon and stars and deserts so much. I have to confess that I've played Little Fluffy Clouds nice and loud whilst out in the desert, and that it was rather gratifying.

We don't get clouds here very often though. Haven't seen one for weeks in fact, and not likely to until next month when the monsoon starts.

Give me a shout when you're here Drew*, I'll buy you a beer. I'm about ten minutes from 4th Ave, which is the funky hippy shopping street in town.

* That's if you can drag yourself away from the Mrs of course.... :icon_razz

Looks a bit like Rannoch Moor near here
It does a bit, although on the whole I suspect it's a bit drier :icon_wink

Here's a nice Scottish one for you HF: the view from Sumburgh Head looking north over south mainland Shetland. Virkie Fox's house is the most centrally positioned in the photo, near the top at the left end of that little blue streak of water which is the Pool of Virkie. Not that Virkie Fox ever posted on here much.
