Actually, I think I might start my own religion - Foxism! Who else is going to join the Foxist revolution?

I would think you are preaching to the converted on that one!

Except for the BM's of course who are the extremists that every religion has lurking in its ranks.

So as far as they're concerned a dangerous animal was given the name Mohammed.

But not by the teacher herself who is now suffering the consequences of letting the children in her care choose a name.

Really quite bizarre the whole thing.

Different cultures have different ways of doing things, you should at least try to understand their way of life.

For example in America many people see it as a basic right to be able to carry a gun. But if an American did that in the UK they could be sent to prison. But if the American government tried to tell us our law was wrong we'd tell them to piss off. Ignorance of the law is no excuse.

This has been argument throughout it all. As daft as we may think the law is, it's their country and they can make their laws as they choose. She should have known after the incident with the Danish cartoons that it was a sensitive issue with Muslims, and if she didn't like it she could have come back to England.

Surely that statement needs expanding........

You've gotta watch out for those dangerous teddy bears ... now where was I? Oh yeah, expanding ... I thought I'd explained it all in the "What Would You Do If You Were God" thread but got drowned out by a tide of anti-christian bile ... hmmm ... I'll just go check and get back to you. :icon_wink

I agree with all the points about learning and respecting the culture and religion in any country in which you are living/working, but some scenarios are just so ludicrous you really can't predict them - and you pay heavily for the tiniest slip.

My daughter is teaching in Ghana at the moment, and I'm thankful its not an islamic republic!

But what about her responsibility. If a child in this country wanted to call a class pet Twatface then the teacher would be obliged to go against it, as it is offensive to people in this culture. And if she didn't she should expect repercusions. The only difference is the punishment.

Totally Agree. She must have known using the name might cause offense. It doesnt matter if we think the law there is stupid. If you go to live in another country you have to follow it, simple as.

But that if they wanted to call it "Mohammed", that isn't a christian name, and we are a Christian country by classification.

I don't think anyone would have a problem with mohammed over here? Most of the muslims I know are westernised enough to know we wouldn't mean it in an offensive way.

Anyway nobody has thought to arrest her for just giving it a stupid name, all bears should be called Pooh or Paddington, it's only right and proper

As I thought, we're more tolerant and accepting than the Sudanese.

Twatface is not a name, Mohammad is. Whilst it is also true that it is a 'significant' name in Islamic culture, it is still a name nonetheless and is still given to children in Islamic countries. Some of these same children chose to give the name to the child's toy and.........

No, not worth it. The whole thing IMHO is bizarre and the result of an extreme overreaction by certain people. This episode could have been dealt with in a low key manner but it seems that certain people have a different agenda to others.

whose classification?

whose classification?
"classification" was a wrong choice of word, I know that, and you knew I knew that, but it felt the most relevant as most people on here aren't at your superior level of intelligence :icon_wink

But you knew what I meant, and you know that I know that you knew what I meant, and so did everybody else :icon_bigg
