Did you mean to say it's not often that more than 39 points is needed? Because only 3 of those 7 seasons did the team have 39 points or more - but the average needed to stay up across those seasons would've been 34/35.

But most of the teams finished clear of 18th - you only need to finish 1pt (or goal difference) better than the bottom 3, so the 34/35 number is closer to the number of points needed to stay up.
