Speculation The hysterical and annoying, but traditional, totally unfounded spring/summer 2019 rumours thread.

What a useless group of numbers. No mention of opposition, other players in those games, how many were home or away ties, how many were penalties or free kicks how many minutes each pairing had and countless other important statistics needed to come to any conclusions (if this is at all possible). If this is supposed to prove that Evans and Morgan are better defenders than Maguire then the evidence is as ridiculous as the notion.

Not to mention how many we scored ourselves with each partnership. I’d imagine we score less ourselves with Morgan and Evans.

Come on now. There are many useless numbers but these are just simple facts. We were more solid defensively when Maguire wasn't in the side. Many of us pointed this out through the season too.

I seem to recall that there was even one game last season where we left Maguire on the bench, preferring Morgan and Evans to him. And then there was Burnley away where we won the match (again thanks mainly to Morgan) despite Maguire's idiotic red card leaving us in the lurch.

Maguire is many things. He is big, strong, capable on the ball and a positive character on and off the pitch. And I would rather he was here than at Man Utd. However, he is just a good defender. No more, no less.

I think we'll barely notice his absence, whether we sign a replacement or not.

It's also worth remembering that we lost Mahrez last summer and panicked to replace him. We even went for a left footed, right winger from Algeria. That's how desperate we were to replace his role. It was a total waste of time and we're now left with a nothing player that we can't get rid of.

So, I'm relaxed about Maguire going, just annoyed that he's going to a team we could finish above. I'm also relaxed about replacing him as I think we're well covered in the centre of defence. However, what we absolutely shouldn't do is splash a load of silly money on someone for the sake of it and a mad attempt to fill a hole that doesn't really exist.

You actually think that these statistics show us anything at all, despite the fact I have pointed out just a few of the obvious omissions which make them valueless? I mean, there's grasping at straws and then there's this absolute garbage. You may have pointed it out last season but you were as incorrect then as you are now and no amount of nonsense such as this will go anyway to showing otherwise.

If we are posting meaningless statistics that prove nothing and passing them off as fact then this one shows that we will indeed 'notice' that he has gone, not least of all when it comes to goal scoring opportunities:

In terms of defending, this one tells us he is at least as good as VVD and only made one error leading to a goal rather than the umpteen you seem to 'remember':

I'm pretty sure these show the square root of **** all in reality but they are just as 'notable', 'accurate' and 'factual' as the nonsense you posted.

Whilst I have no particular desire to join this discussion, you can’t really say that they’re not factual, unless you think they’re untrue. You could argue that they are meaningless, or lack context, but, assuming they’re correct, they are true.

He is a very good player. Is he worth 85 million, no chance. Is he better than Morgan, yes. Is he better than Evans, maybe. Do we need a replacement, I think we do. I am not totally convinced with Soyuncu at this stage.

Not sure why you’re bothered that he’s going to a team we can finish above, after all he’s just a good defender. No more, no less.

The ones I posted are facts. They are equally as misleading. That was my point.

Because he has the attributes that Man Utd are desperately short of. They're not complete idiots, there is a reason they've spent so much on him.

We're nothing like Man Utd so our loss of Maguire isn't as big as their need for him. It's not difficult.

You're correct. Man Utd are desperately short of defenders. Good defenders.

Is Morgan turning into Marmite here?

There seems to be a group that think Morgan was washed up straight after he collected his Champions medal and should only have been used as an occasional substitute in the 3 years since.

There is another group that believe that, whilst now a bit slower, Morgan has mostly been as good a defender for the 3 last years, because of his experience, strength and cleverness to read a game and know where to be, so has earned the right to still be second or first choice.

There was of course a much smaller group, that might still exist, that believed that Morgan was so slow and old 5 years ago when we were promoted into the PL, that he should have been dropped and put out to grass back then!

I firmly believe Big Wes can still do a job for us.

I think he could do a job for us at times. But not as first choice or for all occasions.

If we're expecting a game to be back to the walls and defending deep then that's where Morgan is useful I think.

But if we want to play further up and expansive football from the back, Morgan and Evans would get caught out terribly.
