How come they never give the cheapest price? I got cheaper tickets by going into the station, especially after they got me to get a family railcard.

try raileasy - have always got better prices with them...

Thetrainline and Raileasy should both have the same prices because they use the same system to get the fares. But they are both too expensive, because they both charge a booking fee, and they don't include the extra discounts some of the train operating companies have for their own tickets.

If you're travelling from Leicester to London for example, first check Megatrain, who have some really cheap tickets (usually at inconvenient times), and compare their prices with East Midlands Trains, who run the trains from Leicester to London. The train operators aren't allowed to charge a booking fee, so they should always be cheaper than Thetrainline and Raileasy.

On this subject Jeff which company should I book with to go from Hinckley (or Leicester) upto Manchester.

It depends on the route.

You could go via Cross Country Trains if you change at Birmingham, or Virgin if you change at Nuneaton. But I'm not sure if they offer discounts on their own tickets, so you may find it's just as cheap to get them through East Midlands Trains. EMT could be cheaper if you go via Sheffield.
It could also be cheaper to split the journey into separate tickets, but that depends on the date(s) and times of your journey.

Dec 7th got to be at Machester Picadilly for 13:45 at the latest and will be returning around 16:00. Don't mind Hinckley, Nuneaton or Leicester stations. I got it down to around £30 return and £60 return for first class. If the 1st class is that or cheaper I will probably just go for that.

Also is there any chance of getting a train back later on at night, say after the manure game?

Any help much appreciated as always.

The quickest route would be from Nuneaton, with a change of train at Stafford or Stoke.

It would be around £30 for advance tickets on specific trains, but you can save money by splitting your ticket at Stafford, and you wouldn't need to buy it in advance. Nuneaton - Stafford, £5.90 off peak day return. Stafford - Manchester £17.40 off peak return. Total £23.30.


There's no chance of getting a train back after the match, the last one is 20:30.

Ok cheers jeff. Ill have a look at 1st class with the split later. I take it I can get all those tickets from East Midlands trains?

The first part of the journey would be with London Midland. I think they have a first class, but without the free drinks / food / wifi / extra wide seats you get with Virgin.

Ive gone cattle class, can still reserve a window/table seat on the stafford to Manchester leg and got it all for £21.40.
