They didn't change Abbey's name to Santander when they took over.

It might mean there's a merger of Alliance and Leicester and Abbey though. Maybe they'll take the A from Abbey, and the L from Leicester, and call them A&L :icon_wink

Santander's purchase of Alliance & Leicester has already been announced. A&L branches will take the Abbey name.

reminds me of the Cellnet Riverside...

if it becomes the Abbey stand it wont take too much immagination from the away fans to take the piss will it

as far as i was aware and i might be wrong A&L is becoming a subsidiary of Santander, which means it is retaining its separate banking licence

correct. the takeover should be finalised on 10th October, still a few legal formalities to be completed.

Incorrect. The story referred to by Biff in the OP makes it clear that it is intended to merge the two British operations. It is my understanding that this will be under the Abbey name.

Thus no doubt ensuring that more than a few Leicester folk who were only ever in it for the perceived 'localness' will abandon ship.

I read an article yesterday in one of the broadsheets that suggested that it was still unclear whether A&L and Abbey would operate under separate licences post-merger. The context was the issue around the £35k savings protection limit and how the merger would impact on savers with accounts in both banks.

which why the A&L will retain its banking Licence i'm pretty sure this will happen as well with HBOS and Lloyds TSB, securing any investments people have with both banks. This is what happened when the RBS and tookover Nat West.

there is also talk of raising the limit to £50,000

It hasn't happened with either the Cheshire or the Derbyshire Building Society which are being swallowed up by Nationwide in similar circumstances.

In any case, the £35k limit case is not ever likely to be adhered to. They could hardly treat the investors of any future failing institution on a worse fashion than they did when Northern Rock recently hit problems.

Santander have confirmed they intend to retain the A&L brand in the short term. Change next week then?

I agree with your point about the Northern Rock precedent but it is still a risk - albeit an unquantifiable one. The problem is that we are into fairly strange and somewhat unpredictable times.

On the Cheshire & Derbyshire - I just think that the A&L has a more marketable/ valuable brand name. Anyway, my assumptions are based on A&L not being a seperate entity for protection calculation purposes.
