Fair enough, I never saw him play. Just remember my uncle referring to him as a midfielder once.

Of course being too good for the Championship does not mean being Prem quality as the gulf is huge.

Do you think there might be some sort of metaphysical limbo league in between the two where players like that end up?

The Champiership?

The Champiership?

Some of them end up in Premiership teams struggling against relegation, others on Prem subs benches or reserve teams.

An obvious example is Martyn Waghorn. In the last third of the season I thought he was outstanding at Championship level. However, few people expect that he will be in the regular starting XI for Sunderland.

Obviously years can change this. Martyn Waghorn at his peak may well be Prem class and then in his thirties end up back in the Championship.

The biggest example of a gulf in class I have known is Roger Davies. As a First Division player he was regarded as a bit of a joke but he was the finest non-league player I have ever seen.

I see.
So, you're not denying the existence of the Champiership then.

I love Nigel Pearson for this. We can spend months and months speculating, and still get it totally wrong.

If he turns out to be as good as morrison, hobbs or dyer for us, this could be very promising indeed. And is it correct we have him free as well? I'm not entirely up on what the options are at this point- he officially joins July 1?

According to the Rochdale fans Doncaster Rovers offered his £3,000 a week. No doubt we offered him enough to change his mind. We have not had players for free since the days of Nicky Summerbee.

Eh?

Lloyd Dyer is a player we got for free.

We've had quite a few players for free in the last 2-3 seasons (Dickov, N'Gotty, Newton, Cort etc). Admittedly some weren't very good, but it's not been seven years since we signed a player on a free deal.

I'm guessing he meant free of wages also.

But it's a while since any have played without getting paid.
It's a disgrace, footballers expecting to get money just for kicking a ball around.
Most people are happy just to do it for the love of the game.
If we can't get any English players to play for free we should get some of those foreign types in. Those happy go lucky Africans will play for free as long as you give them somewhere for their goats to graze. Or get some Irish in, give them a sack of potatoes a month and they'll do anything for you. Wouldn't like to have one living next door though.

Not a bad signing at all he looks to be a decent player and I remember seeing his celebration against Bury which was quite funny, decent signing I hope.

As others have been astute enough to notice my reference to Nicky Summerbee was because he played for no wages.

These days players wages are far more important to a clubs finances than they used to be. The question is not merely can we afford a players transfer fee but can we afford his wages. When Jimmy Bloomfield signed Weller and Birchenall on the same day (a very good day) the talk was all about how the board had twice come up with £100,000 transfer fees and not about how this would add to the wage bill.

As for Carl Cort IMO we paid a heavy price. We were about to sign Jimmy Floyd Hasselbank who had agreed terms and passed the medical when Martin Allen changed his mind because he already had the "awesome" Carl Cort. IMO Jimmy would have kept us up not so much through his ability on the ball but because his fierce attitude is something we were badly lacking that season.

Apparently he's the nephew of the ex-Liverpool and England player Alan Kennedy.
