The contradictory drivel i refer to is the many supposed causes, solutions and ramifications that people are coming up with. Truth is, nobody knows what to do. I personally don't think there is anything we can do in the short term and we just have to sit it out.

I said we could judge how badly we have been affected by the speed of the turnaround, not the ability of the government. I don't think the decisions would be too dissimilar if someone else was in charge.

These are the people who expect things to be sorted for them and then blame everyone but themselves when it all goes to pot.

At the risk of sounding like a **** I haven't actually felt the resession yet, and don't know if I will. Not to say I don't sympathise with the obviously large amount of people who have through no fault of their own. It's alright blaming the mortgage companies for lending to people who can't pay it back, but those very same people should shoulder a part of the blame for not having the self restraint to not borrow what they can't afford.

I have felt the effects, but in a positive way.

My mortgage has gone down and a few of my competitors have gone tits up.

I agree, though they do cover this (at least they do at the 2 school my missus has worked at) in PHSE, though not to a massive level I admit. I think, and it may sound very old of me, that it seems a lot of kids are growing up now having not really had to struggle for anything. Certain members of my family get whatever they want, and if they break it they get a replacement. When they grow up they think the same should apply so they just buy on credit, they never worried about the cost before, they don't know how to now.

I may be wrong though.

Agreed. And to add to that I would say that in today's society it pays to be lazy. I'm all for the Welfare State and all that but these days it is just being fleeced, to the point where every hard working citizen is being penalised.

I wouldn't want a state where the rich get richer and the poor get poorer but I certainly dont want one where the rich get richer and the poor get richer - there has to be incentive to work hard.

Most of the people who are emigrating now (and there are a lot and will almost certainly be more) are skilled people, people we really need to try and keep here to make our country prosperous.

The very principles of what she bred have bitten us back on the arse. Still 'New Labour' had the opportunity to turn it around, they exacerbated the problem.

My ideas would be controversial but have a positive effect. Sadly we're in the EU up to our necks so it can;t be implemented.

1) Limit the number of non UK staff per business to a percentage/ratio based on turnover.
2) People out of work will be given a three strikes rule. Refuse a job three times and have their benefits cut by %50.
3) Introduce business tax breaks on NI contributions for new employees. Set a limit per company based on staff levels to ensure hiring and firing doesn't take place.
4) Nationalise all banks (we might as well!) All eventual profits go back into the system.
5) Increase tax on fags and booze.
6) Lower tax on fuel for business usage
7) Increase corporation tax
8) Tax Non-Doms
9) Increase benefits for foreign business investment such as car companies.

Sadly the current incumbent are basing policies on getting back on Joe Publics good side rather than trying to get us out of this shit. None of the above will help them win an election but it may get us out of the shit in the long run.
