Western music was big in the 40's and Slim Whitman had a unique voice (but I agree with you).

Saw Rush about 8 years ago, didn't know much about them, my wife is a big fan, Geddy Lee's voice is bloody awful.

It's an acquired taste. The fact is though it's distinctive and memorable. They wrote some good tracks too. Lyrics with thought - The Maple and the Oaks track about independence was very clever.
