An excellent post. This completely unfounded rhetoric about bad attitudes, downing tools blah blah blah is just a very easy route through which some fans can vent their anger...I'm not saying that they shouldn't be criticised, of course they should when merited but this constant moaning and groaning about what goes on in the dressing room or behind the scenes even though this is based on spurious rumours, badly written tabloid junk and lazy guess work is all too often trotted out without any evidence whatsoever. The reasons behind some of our poorer performances run much, much deeper than 'they can't be arsed' or 'they want their mate in charge'. It's much more psychological...
The new man must address this fear of failure if we are to move forward but the fans must play their part in this too which, in all honesty, most do week in week out.

Great post Popillius. Players usually over-preform or under-perform due to the management/coaching & management. Under performances have not mainly been down to conspiracies or complacency by the players at the moment as you say.

They may well need confidence & not to fear failure instilled in them too.
The only person who I felt was more personally responsible for under-performing both last season and this, was Mahrez. However, though one game may not be enough to judge, he may be sorting his head out now - and making it show with his feet! About time too. Anyway, not to distract from your post, think it was very insightful and apposite.

I think there was a definite attitude problem last season, we started the season looking lazy, put a shift in immediately after Ranieri's sacking, and then dropped again once safety was assured.

This season I have felt that the effort from most of the players has improved, but the tactics and lack of quality in midfield has made it difficult, and the players, while they may have confidence in themselves, don't seem to have confidence in each other anymore.

I would have been with you on this until Southampton away last season. That's when it became obvious that certain players were choosing when to give their all and when not to. The only other rational explanation for several of the players performances that day is that they were betting against themselves and I'd really hope that isn't the case.

Some players decided to chuck Ranieri under the bus last season for whatever reason. Maybe a few of them resented the attention and adulation that he received. Maybe some of them thought that Ranieri was lucky to get the gig he did and make it all look so easy.

In addition, maybe a few of them know that they'll never do anything like 2015/16 again so motivation will always be difficult from now on. Who knows?

None of this is to do with confidence. You can't turn confidence on and off (see the difference between performances in the Champions League and other games last season) and the only player that has looked remotely like they've struggled for it is Ndidi. You're highly unlikely to be afraid when you're Champions. You should feel a foot taller and much more resilient than before.

The far more likely explanation is that winning the league has gone to a few heads and they think that they're something that they're not and they can do what they want now. Our owners, agents, and general leeches have probably exacerbated this.

And if you want names, my prime suspects are - Schmeichel, Morgan, Fuchs, Drinkwater (before leaving of course) and Vardy. And of these, the latter three were the worst. I didn't see the on/off performances from the likes of Huth, Simpson, Okazaki, Albrighton and Mahrez. When they were poor, they were just poor and their form shifts were rational enough.

Good post apart from this bit;
You're highly unlikely to be afraid when you're Champions. You should feel a foot taller and much more resilient than before.

Expectation and pressure can do strange things to a person.

With Koeman gone it could be bad news for us depending on the calibre of manager we're both looking for.

Their owner seems to be ambitious and have a "big name" attitude. If so Pellegrini, Ancelotti (though unlikely) and Fonseca seem unlikely to choose us over them. Although i don't really understand why one would see Everton as a step up over us.

I'd still love to go for Ancelotti or Laurent Blanc and see what happens.

Blanc is rumoured to be interested in the US National Team position which I don't understand as they're not even in the World Cup.

Surely after over 12 months out Blanc would relish a chance with the 15/16 Premier League champions. Money to spend, with a half decent squad and he'll get good wages and the sexiest supporters.

Failing that, Marco Silva or perhaps David Wagner or Sean Dick.

Really needed him to stay put for Sunday....bugger

Koeman anyone?

His record really isn't that good. He did an OK job at Benfica and was pretty decent at Southampton but they do have well established structure which would have been of benefit. Apart from that all his success has been in Holland. That should ring alarm bells as all the recent managers who have come to the PL from there have failed miserably

For those backing the players and saying they don't need an overhaul or they aren't to blame, take a look at the reaction of the Everton players and the responsibility they quite rightly are shouldering after their manager is sacked.

The exact opposite of our little darlings who are questioning the board and everyone other than themselves.
