I've noticed that lately the insults in this forum are getting increasingly high on the Richter Scale - and i put this down to tormented frustration that it's another season and another set of miserable league results.

The debate about playing good football v winning is just nonsensical given our present situation. We are not winning and we are not playing good football. In fact whilst Megson remains in charge there is no likelihood of either occurring.

Just as a matter of interest why was Megson given a reported three years contract ?- I hope that the club has some results based get out clause because Milan has already wasted loads of money on buying largely poor players and sacking people that he has just appointed that I wouldn't like to see him waste more money on paying off yet another failure. And yes I realise that it's his money to waste but on the otherhand the popular support for his takeover was at least partly based on the assumption that his money would make a major difference to the results.

I really think some people would be happy if we got relegated as long as we played nice football. Relegation or staying in this division too long will mean less money for the club and worse players coming in, whilst all the time teams are relegated into this division armed with millions and we will not be able to compete. We have to kick and scratch our way out of this league.

But that approach hasn't worked for the three years and more we've been trying it. And under Adams we didn't go up because we were employing a basic style of play, we went up because we had a tough defence and effective strikers that we knew how to get the ball to. None of that is true now. The 'Hoofball versus Prettyball' thing is a red herring, especially as every team in Britain (except Arsenal) reverts to hoofing it anyway when they're under pressure. Direct football played badly is hideous to watch, but so is one-paced imagination-free pointless passing (remember Taylor?). O'Neill's teams were reasonably direct but as I recall it was bloody fantastic football because it had a dynamic to it. We haven't looked like a TEAM since the Adams promotion season IMO.

I don't think so BG - only the sort of sad head cases who were saying last season that relegation was ok because they would then be able to visit different grounds.

You are right in essence. This close season the club seems to have found it impossible to bring in many decent players - presumably because better players are not keen to join a struggling second tier club - and that is what we are; not mediocre just poor.

What is called for is a manager who is tough, talented and determined to drag up this club by its boot laces. Somehow Milan has to find someone like that - and yes I agree that we probably have to largely rely on kicking our way out of this league, but as things stand we have a much better chance of sliding into League 1.

No thats just plane wrong :018:

Should have used this one, then

I don't think anyone said going down would be OK.

But some idiots keep bringing up a quote of mine when I said *IF* we went down I would enjoy having new grounds to visit. I didn't say I wanted to go down or it would be OK. And I never thought we would go down, unlike a lot of the people here. I was just trying to find positives out of the situation.

I agree with much that you say, however, in the paragraph pulled from your last post, I think that you are being excessively generous. The club's acquisition policy through the summer was unfocused. Nobody forced us to keep signing players and we do not need 40 plus quality players.
It seems that we were signing by committee, with several people deciding which players would be 'good for the club'. This is a task that should be performed by one man; preferably the manager, but if needs must, the chairman.

Why do you want us to go down Jeff?

Doesn't make sense at all, there's no way Joey would drop a division.

I hope that you are right - and the signings were a one off malfunction. The acquisitions from abroad didn't seem like they would have been the manager's choice. In fact, did Martin Allen ever travel abroad for football reasons?

I assume that Milan as part of his 'ownership' function demands a big say in signings and I think we have to accept that he is in the mode of the owner/ president role as understood in Europe with a totally hands on approach. In fact, I think I might prefer Milan to Megson when it comes to acquisitions.

Quite.

I realise that to interpret your comments of last season as welcoming relegation would be as misleading as your suggestion that I was a big fan of Rob Kelly (after the first couple of months of his tenure.)

Well, he was very enthusiastic about him.

OK - I have been sussed.

Yes - bring back Rob. Of all the managers we have had including Matt Gillies, Jimmy Bloomfield, Jock Wallace and MON - Rob stands out for his tough talking, team selection and strategic acumen.

I'm just amazed that he isn't being discussed as a potential successor to Fergie alongside Mark Hughes and Roy Keane.

Better still what about the dream management team of: Craigie boy as Director of Sport; the Ginger one as manager and Rob as First Team coach (a job in which I'm assured he excelled when we were near bottom of the league)

TBH I think the main problem is and has been for quite some time, our home form. We have not since the year we moved in, made the Walkers a 'tough' place to come for the opposition. This is the most notable problem we have IMO.

Yes, a point that seems to be missed by many, and for me the reason why so many of our fans are miserable. Our home form since that opening season is a total joke. The fans are so quick to turn these days and who can blame them?

This for me is the main worry with Megson and his brand of football, he will have to win almost every home game to stand any chance of winning us over. I hate to say that I now expect that last minute equalizer/winner, stupid defending or glaring miss at every visit to the Walkers, you can feel the despondency in the air even when 1-0 up, we know what's almost certainly coming next....

We really need the win tomorrow not just for the 3 points but also hopefully for a major turning point.

Think of it as a recruitment process with a job apllication form/person specification (quite appropriate, as we may well get through a few candidates this season)

Winning League matches, and getting promoted are the only essential criteria

Playing nice football, a lovely cup run, communicating with fans, plus everything else that you can think of, are merely desirable criteria

At the moment no-one has got through the initial sift

It's funny you should mention the recruitment process, because it's changed these days. We no longer follow the criteria we have done over the past few years. One man makes all the decisions now ;)

Thank feck for that

It's hardly proved to be a runaway success has it ?

No different from the previous regime. One truly common thread though. ;)
