Fowler plays waiting game Jul 18 2007
by Steve Tucker, Western Mail
CARDIFF CITY’S hopes of signing Robbie Fowler have received a huge setback after the Liverpool goal ace decided to hold out on making a decision about his future in the hope of receiving more offers.
Fowler is on holiday in Portugal mulling over the eight offers he currently has on the table.
Amongst those are bids from the Bluebirds, Leicester, Sydney FC, where Fowler recently returned from a visit, and Scottish giants Rangers.
Cardiff are still optimistic about their chances of landing their man and an insider told the Western Mail last night, “We’re in with as good a chance as anyone else at this stage.”
But Fowler’s advisor George Scott said the player had until the transfer window closes at the end of next month to weigh up his options ... and might well take that amount of time before committing himself.
“To be honest, Robbie is enjoying the little bit of freedom he’s got at the moment,” said Scott.
“He is not in a mood to be rushed. He is considering eight offers at the moment, but the phone is always ringing and there is plenty of interest.
“We’ve been forced to say thanks, but no thanks to a few of them.
“I wouldn’t want to put the offers in any kind of order yet. Robbie is his own man, he will make up his mind about what is right for him and especially what’s right for his family.
“Robbie’s got six weeks really and there is no saying he won’t take that time before putting pen to paper and finally decide where he’s going.
“As I say, offers are coming in all the time and there is the option there to wait until more clubs come in and decide then.
“Sydney is still in there, we felt we should go out there at least. They had come to Liverpool and we thought it polite to take up their offer to go there.
“Cardiff’s bid is getting the same serious consideration as the others. We know the chairman, Peter Ridsdale, is an ambitious man. I know him and he’s always impressed me as a person, a businessman and just a thorough football man at heart.”
Scott said he believed if Fowler did pick Cardiff, it would be one of the best signings the Bluebirds have ever made.
Scott added, “I see Michael Chopra has gone to Sunderland, that was a hell of a good bit of business for Cardiff.
“They had that great start last season, then couldn’t get a win for 13 games I think it was. A striker, someone like Robbie, would solve that for them.”
Meanwhile, Leicester chairman Milan Mandaric said he was also positive about his club’s prospects of landing Fowler.
“I think every ambitious club would be interested in Robbie Fowler,” said Mandaric.
“There is not much to speak about him, everyone knows who he is. He is a tremendous footballer, a good lad, a good person and, if he could come and join us, we would be very happy.
“There is dialogue and we are going to see what will happen next. I think it’s too early for me to say anything like that, we will see what happens.
“He also has a lot of options and it depends on what he wants to do and how ambitious he is. I’m always hopeful, always positive.”
Meanwhile Cardiff’s hopes of signing Birmingham striker Rowan Vine have also reached a stumbling block, again over the issue of finances.
Back in January Cardiff offered £1.2m for Vine when he was still with Luton Town.
Birmingham eventually secured his services for £2.5m rising to £3m when Steve Bruce’s men secured promotion to the Premiership.
The Bluebirds are adamant about sticking to their original valuation and will not go higher.
A club source told the Western Mail, “That is what Vine was valued at in January by us and that remains the valuation now. He has played even fewer games since then if anything.”
This is starting to drag. Is it a coincidence he's on holiday in Portugal which is where Cardiff were on tour until Tuesday.
I think that if Mr Big Time is going to sign for either our teams he needs to do it by the weekend and get training with his new team-mates. Either that or feck of to the OAPs home in Sydney.
I suppose none of this matters long term tho does it. It's an obvious but worthwhile thing to say that if he came to us the day before the season starts and scored 5 in the first 10, we wouldn't give a rats chuff when he joined us.
I'm sure we wouldn't mind, I know I wouldn't. The players would probably feel a bit pissed though, especially the likes of Hammond and DeVries who seem to have really put the effort in this pre season. Wouldn't do much for team morale if Fowler were to walk in and be first choice striker without going through the same pre season as the rest of the lads.
I know what you're saying, and that's valid. But on the other hand, it doesn't do a great deal for team morale when you keep spooning the ball 10 feet over the bar either! Nothing better for team morale than a succession of wins and a chance of a premiership pay packet.
DeVries for top scorer this season. You heard it here first :icon_wink
He looks a lot fitter too from the photos. Fair play to him. Shows he's got desire at least.
He looked a good stone lighter last night and tried hard but to be honest he was still shite in the air and had the touch of a baby elephant. Theres no way he scored last night either, Hayes scored. Fact.
Like many have said, his stats are no worse than the other strikers we have so why not.
I have it in my head that he played well when we beat Spurs in the cup. Can anyone confirm I'm full of it cus he just scored a goal and did fark all else, or that indeed I have an accurate memory of the events that evening?
How Paul Robinson, England's number 1 keeper did not save that shot still baffles me to this very day!!!
