For me they get an awful lot of unwarranted stick. Today Wellen's along with Drinkwater controlled the game for us. Ritchie was dynamic, aggressive and his passing was very good. Gallagher showed that he is the most technically gifted player in the squad with a wonderful free-kick and an excellently executed penalty. I also thought his all round play was very good.

Everyone is entitled to criticise players when they don't perform but we should also remember to praise them when they have performed well. Well done fellas, more of the same on tuesday!

Therein lies the conundrum.

Praise indeed is required, and justly so, for a very good win today and some very good performances, but it really does need to be followed up with a win on Tuesday.

Both were excellent today. Wellens dominated the midfield in the second half especially.

I like Wellens, I have always thought he gets stuck in, controls the game well and can pick a pass. He has come in for some stick because he's looked lazy and lacklustre, especially under Sven and the start of the second Nige reign. The one thing about Wellens is, when he plays well, the team plays well. When he doesn't play well, the team doesn't play well.

Gallagher for me is simply frustrating, you get days like today where he's very good, followed by a month of utter crap performances. This supposed 'technical gift' he has does exist, he just can't produce it enough on a regular basis, granted you can't expect to smash in a 25 yard pearler from a free kick every game. However, the standard of his corners I feel are very poor and easy to defend. They are floated, lack any kind of whip and pace and for someone, who clearly has such good technical ability, I find it very, very frustrating.

He isn't willing to put his foot in or head the ball. Now I'm sure Prof will be along to tell me that isn't his game, but if we have players that aren't willing to tackle when there is a perfectly reasonable opportunity to do so, then I find this very frustrating as well. Even players at a lower standard, every one is capable of just 'putting themselves about' so to speak, and actually get a foot in. Gallagher did this today, I saw him win headers and commit to tackles, leading to him having a good game and thoroughly deserving his two goals. Of course this wasn't the only thing that lead to him having a good game, he was involved in our most promising attacking moves.

Gallagher is far too few and far between, but I'd love nothing more to be proved wrong and see him add consistency to his game.

I think v saints and again today, wellens shows that he's the quality to dictate games. Unfortunately he's been a victim of team inconsistency that has seen a dip in his own form, particularly this season. Drink water can give wellens the license to get the ball down and play, so he's proven a good addition. Unfortunately wellens couldn't rely on abe, king etc to do the same closing down job for him which is why people on here were always asking for a ball winning midfielder! Gallagher gives the same problem to leicester that England had for years with Joe cole, Gerrard etc. Namely, you want him in the side but you know that he doesn't give the side balance if he's playing out wide....today's goals were great set pieces but they still don't make him a wide right or left player!

Spot on.. just like Gallagher today. Let's hope to see more of the Beta version on Tuesday.

Lako42 said before the game......

"Gally, seriously?"

Give thanks that Nigel picks the team......

Gally has had his 1 in 10, it's nothing to go bonkers about, I have heard that his overall play was not very good today but can'y say it's my own opinion as I was not there.

Look forward to seeing Gally play the way he has since the 2 goals in the Palace game now, :(

So he scored a peno and free kick, that's his ****ing job, and how many games does he fail at it? the worst thing is that he now gets another 10 games playing utterly shite because of his big set piece breakthrough, hallelujah!!

He played well yesterday.

I don't think he did. He wasn't bad by any means - his goals won us the game after all - but without his brace I doubt that anybody would be praising his performance. I will agree that Wellens looked better with Drinkwater alongside him.

I'm not sure the two of them deserve particular praise for performing above their recent standards The criticism both have received of late has been justified. They bloody well should be performing better than they have been in the last few weeks. Regardless of how they played yesterday neither are good enough to be part of a first eleven with promotion ambitions next season.

What exactly did he do wrong yesterday?

Agree completely.

Problem is there is a mantra doing the rounds that apart from his stunning free kick and unstoppable penalty he didn't play very well yesterday.

Penalties should be unstoppable. A goalkeeper has a much more difficult job than the taker in a penalty situation. And, yes, his free kick was excellent. We all know he is capable from dead ball situations. Unfortunately his contribution from open play isn't good enough most of the time. Yesterday was an improvement (perhaps he was buoyed by his scoring), but it wasn't what I'd call a 'good' performance. Acceptable, certainly. For a player of his supposed technical ability his passing, and his crossing in particular, just aren't good enough on a consistent basis. I will say though that his corner delivery was very good yesterday.

OK, I would think that an 'acceptable' performance topped up by a couple of good goals adds up to a pretty decent overall game. Gallagher will always find it hard to really impress on the right as he's not a natural wide player. I thought he kept things simple all game and did enough defensively to make it very difficult for Cardiff.

Agreed. The problem for me is I don't see how he can contribute elsewhere. Not in the first eleven at least. And has been said above his good performances, like those of Wellens, are all too rare. If we want to be a side which challenges for promotion next season then they both need to be squad players at best.

They have both had spells at the club during which they have been good players, but those spells are in the past. There should be no room for sentiment when building a team which can take us to the next level.
