he can't single those fans out that he wants to react against. Therefore, the sensible thing is not to do it in the first place.

Why would that be the sensible thing to do? The fans that haven't been abusing him all, to a man, knew full well that he wasn't gesturing at them, every last one of them. In fact, you'd have to be fairly demented to think otherwise.

I was pleased he made the gesture. Good on him. It shut up the morons around me for a few mins at least.

Instead of choosing to cup his ear to the fans as though he had totally turned his form around and started playing like Pele maybe he should concentrate on performing well more regularly?

It was a Penalty, did he think that the way he faced away from the goalkeeper before scoring made up for the total shite he's served up in the previous 8 games? It was a ridiculous reaction from a person who obviously has a very jumped up opinion of his own ability, he needs to get some perspective, not one of those fans owe him a thing, they have already given him enough.

And those saying he should not receive criticism from the crowd, grow a pair and stop pretending we are living in a fluffy dream land where the world is a lovely place to be, it's not, these footballers have a terrible time, just look at the houses they live in and the cars they drive, poor Bastards.

Its not criticism we're on about its abuse.

Obviously there is a fine line, however I fail to see how a frustrated football fan offers criticism to a player from the stands without it crossing into someones realm of abuse.

Its things like personal abuse on twitter.

I'm going to start tutting everytime he gets the ball, it is far from being 'abuse' (I think) but it'll get my point heard. Perhaps everyone who doesn't think he is very good should do this.

You seriously fail to understand the difference between expressing frustration and abuse?

Suggestion: don't get married.

I am waiting for someone to tell me how to acceptably purvey frustration towards a player in a game.

I won't, I get abused enough as it is.

Presuming that by purvey you actually mean display, I think you should definitely send them and members of their family abusive messages on twitter. That'll definitely show 'em

If you do the Twitter thing then using a #FRUSTY hastag will certainly get across the frustration message, I agree with @Macky

My best mate's dad was a bit of an idiot, he had some sort of complex about comparing his son to me. When playing under 10s football and I got the ball he would shout "Oh god no don't give it to him" The ref told him to clear off once. I laugh about it now but I do remember it being slightly annoying, perhaps your suggestion might just work.
