I lost about £650 last night, money I couldn't really lose as I had borrowed it from some friends. I felt I let them down now.

So I realised I'm most likely a gambling addictive, albeit perhaps not a worst case scenario (Casino-Jimmy, Merson...), as I've promised myself to stop several times but never done it. I never lost that much money before, so I hope this can help me stop.

Anyway, just thought if anyone here has had a gambling addiction or has had any experiences related to it?

Years ago I worked in a casino, and I soon found out only mugs bet. There is only ever one winner and thats not the punter. Some people would win a few grand and they are Jack the Lad, but how much did they lose before and after that win?

You have not let your friends down as you will be paying the money back no doubt, but you let yourself and family down big time though.

I guess I haven't found a reason to stop when I haven't lost money, even though people have told me you'll never win long term. I'll have to look at it as an expensive lesson.

Im far from being a gambling addict but I do find the urge to gamble can arrise when im bored, I may have a few to many footy accumulators as well.

One thing is for sure, when you do win your never satisfied with the winnings and will always end up pumping it back in, im only a casual gambler but i have lost a lot more than I've won over the years.

Cancel all online accounts, and ask to be banned from casino or betting outlets. A strong action but it's the only way.

I bet you a tenner somebody comes on here and says something daft.

It's a mugs game my dad gambled all his life (even when he was dying of cancer in hospital) from an early age and his mum and dad particularly his mum were big gamblers as well.

Mostly it was on the horses and the dogs but my dad used to frequent the casinos as well and had so many systems you wouldn't believe it. He wrote the numbers down of a night at the casino as they came up and then spend the day working out calculations before going back to the casino then next nite to lose again usually. Although he did win sometimes and had some big ones as well and shower my mum with presents even treated me and my sister if either of us was around. BUT the times when he took money without asking, once when I lived at home from my plastic football money box, and borrowed money under my mothers name didn't make up for the good times.

Unfortunately he was addicted and although he did try Gamblers Anonymous it never really worked although it did help for a while.

I once got a bit addicted myself when I was younger so I am careful I never get tempted in case I get carried away.

I'm worried my son may get addicted though as he is 16 now and plays on fruit machines (some he plays he knows exactly when it pays out somehow), when we go to our caravan on the coast. Trouble is he does win quite well at times and I never give him much money BUT once he gets his own money I'm concerned he will throw it all away and these winning runs come to an end.

Thanks for the comments everyone. I think this was a bit of a wakeup call for me and as Lako says, nothing good can really come out of it as you always put your winnings back in. Well at least I did.

Swede not having a go cus i'm a gambler myself but i can see how it would have happened with your own money but did nothing occur to you that you were betting with someone else's money.

I've always gambled but always do it with my own money. ive never borrowed to gamble. I had a big bet recently that didn't go my way and its served as a wake up call myself. I've not gambled since.

It's good to hear that you think you have a problem and thats always the first step to beating it. As others have said, cancel any online accounts you have and if you are a regular casino goer or go into a bookies, ask them to ban you.

Good luck trying to beat it mate :023:

If this is the only time it's happened then I wouldn't necessarily say you're addicted. It could be that you just got carried away.

Learn you your lesson and don't do it again.

I have some money left and I will be able to pay my debts eventually, it was just that they will probably be slightly delayed and it felt like a completely unnecessary thing to do.

Now it almost feels like a blessing in disguise if I can stay away from it (which I am quite confident I will, I know the risks now).

I've tried to stop before but I've never lost that amount of money at once before. But addicted is probably a step too far, it's not like I've put my house (shoebox flat) on betting.

It's just that I don't like the feeling of not being able to quit when I tried to.

A few years ago i went down my local with £10. At the time a pint cost about £1.20p. The plan was to have 3 or 4 pints, a few games of pool, and a £1 in the slot machine.
That night i was down there early doors and before my mates had arrived. I decided to put a £1 in the slot machine. I lost, in went another pound. I lost again, and in went another.
In the finish i was down to my last pound, and i still had not payed for my 1st pint.
My mates then piled through the door and went straight to the bar.
They all got their drinks in, and placed money on the pool table.
One of them said ' come on brauny, are you having a game '...............' no i'm going home early tonight because there is something i wanted to watch on tv '
Of course it was a lie, and i headed home feeling gutted that i'd ruined my own night out.
It might have been nothing in terms of gambling, but it was a harsh lesson for me. I very rarely put any money in slot machines these days.

I've never put a single penny into a slot machine in my life, and never will, total mug's game.
They're called 'bandits' for a reason.
