Just heard on the radio that Levein intends to start with Hammond & Hume tonight.

Rather see Hume and MDV but Hammond will do although I still don't see him as a Goal threat.

I agree he isn't but at the same time, unlike MDV, he has speed on his side he can draw out a few players leaving hume to score, where as MDV is as slow as a snail!

Thing is Highland, MDV doesn't look as likely to score a goal than Hammond does, at least we pose a threat with these two and give the defenders something to think about with thier pace, Hammond has missed a few, but IMO MDV wouldn't have even got the chance to. I am not an MDV hater, but if we want to carry on playing the style of football we are at the moment MDV isn't an option.

I was gonna say something about when MDV is the option, but I cant actually think of a time when we should use him.

:icon_conf It may look like he's going to but he rarely ever does but I'm prepared to stick by him because he does have other attributes, although MDV is more of a 'Goalscorer 'than Hammond

But Dion is a much better option ....:102: because he comes over and claps the fans at the end.

The thing with MDV is he is quite stattic and it was very clear at the Bolton game, after the pace of the Sheff Utd game, just how slow he is (but I do think he did a fair old job at Bolton playing up front on his own, so I am not having a go), defenders get used to what he is going to do and without anybody running from deep looking for the pass they know he is not going to run it past them. Most of the chances that Elvis has missed (that I have seen) he has created himself, Sheff Utd defenders, IMO, were ripped apart by him and everytime he got the ball they shit themselves. Unfortunatly MDV doesn't have that effect. He still has a very big part to play this season and plays better with Hume than Elvis.

Stoke have some aging big slow defenders in Duberry and Taggart(Legend), so playing the pacy Hume and Hammond is properly gonna work better than playing MDV against these centre backs who can head quite well.
MDV will properly be more useful when playing against smallish defenders or not so strong defenders where he can hold up the ball or get a head on the hoofs.

While I am excited about H&H up front I think some people are being unfair to MDV - he is our top scorer this season and to be fair at times has been strong!

We have to persevere with Hume and Hammond, especially if we want to play this fast energetic style of play, also they are likely to create opportunities for others as well. As for MDV, he is a decent hold up striker but his lack of pace seriously hinders both himself and the team, as shown against Bolton he is too easy to mark and we are a little too one dimensional and static when he is playing, however he does offer a different option from the bench, if we need to change things around and as he has shown this season he is capable of bagging a goal or two, long term though I dont believe he really fits in with the direction the club seems to moving.

Could somebody refresh my memory here:

How many goals has MDV scored again?

How many goals has Elvis "costello" scored?

I don't think anyone is talking MdV down here, but there's no denying that we looked our season-best as an attacking unit against the Blades last week, and the 4 goals don't lie. MdV has come good, and definately has a role to play, but particularly with Stoke's defence is not the best option for this match.
