Well we do need our annual raid on the trent... Scimeca, Williams...

may explain the other mystery face....

WOLLONGONG product Jacob Timpano won't be part of the most keenly watched training session Australian football has seen for some time, when Dwight Yorke steps out with his Sydney FC team-mates for the first time today.

Timpano, who is also on the books at the glamour A-League club, flew to England on Saturday night for a one-week trial with English League Championship club Leicester City.

The hastily arranged trial came after Leicester scouts were impressed with Timpano's performances for Australia in last month's World Youth Championships in the Netherlands.

Speaking from Sydney Airport prior to his departure on Saturday night, Timpano said Leicester made first contact with Sydney FC just 36 hours before he flew out.

"It only started yesterday morning, they contacted Sydney FC and they agreed to let me trial for one week," he said.

Yorke's first appearance on the training pitch comes less than eight weeks before Sydney play Melbourne Victory in the opening round of the A-League at Aussie Stadium on August 28.

His arrival, albeit a day late, last week got the ball rolling for the biggest drawcard in the new national competition.

Timpano will be a world away from the hype in Sydney as he attempts to impress City manager Craig Levein.

The Foxes, who started pre-season training last week, already have Australian's Danny Tiatto, Patrick Kisnorbo and Paul Henderson on their books.

WOLLONGONG product Jacob Timpano

Some info about him... he had trials with Arsenal and Real Madrid

Timpano spent his youth playing days at Fernhill and attended school at the Holy Spirit College in Ballambi. He was picked up by the Wollongong Youth Academy and his talents also gained him two years at the NSW Institute of Sport. While Timpano is now regarded as a central defender, it wasn't too long ago that he was a reputable striker. In fact he was the leading goalscorer in the National Youth League of 2001. Here's a something you can throw up at trivia night; Timpano has considerable upper body strength. At a regional christian high school athletics carnival, Timpano finished second in 14 year old boys discus, with a throw of 27.70. He also finished second in the shot put throwing 10.74. Initially breaking through the Wolves squad at the age of 16, he finished his NSL career with 30+ appearances. He is very unlucky not to be playing in Europe at the moment, as in 2003 he was invited for a trial with Arsenal and Real Madrid were also monitoring his progress but both clubs were scared off by FIFA rules which deny under 18's from working overseas without parental supervision. He has many international youth honours under his belt. He featured in the Under 16's Pacific Cup, captained the Joeys unsuccessful campaign at the Under 17's World Championships in England and has already been named in the Young Socceroos squad that will compete in the Oceania World Youth Championship Qualifiers. He stuck with Wollongong when the NSL finished and on the 4th of December 2004 was snapped up by Sydney FC.

He's a defender. I thought he might have been one of the mystery faces from Friday too, but the article says he didn't leave Australia til Saturday night.
It's nice to see us being linked with a youth international though

From the Merc:
"That department could also soon lose Matt Heath, who is the subject of interest from Championship rivals Hull and Plymouth.

I understand that Peter Taylor's Hull outfit have put in a bid for the Leicester-born 23-year-old that fell below City's valuation and now the former Foxes boss looks like facing competition for his target."

2 clubs going for Heath, hopefully we can get some reasonably good money from that for Levein to spend.

sounds promising!

He's 18 now, Date of Birth: 3.1.86

"Jacob is one of the most promising young talents in Australian football. He made his NSL debut at the age of 16 for Wollongong in 2002 and is the 4th youngest player to debut for the Wolves. He went on to play six games in his debut season. Before the demise of the NSL he played 25 matches for the Wolves, scoring a single goal against the Melbounre Knights from the centre of defence. Jacob has represented Australia at both U17 and U20 level and is held in high regard by some of the best judges in Australia."

He must be 19. But he looks about 39!!!

Sounds like one for the future if his trial is succesful. Wont be 1 of the 2 central defenders Craig has targeted. Sounds promising though. It makes a nice change to see we are placing much more emphasis on youth development these days...

Oops, yep, you're right, he'd be 19 now. You'd think I'd know that seeing as I was born in 86 as well ;)

I know that Steven but his likeness to the other unidientified player is pretty strong, papers have been known to be wrong with their 'facts'. Also doesn't state which Saturday.

19 is a good age. And if there has been a lot of high profile interest perhaps there is a lot there that can be worked on. Worth a go I think!

DWIGHT YORKE OFFICIALLY STARTS SYDNEY FC CAREER
4.07.05

Former Manchester United striker Dwight Yorke kicked the ball for the first time as a Sydney FC player today as he attended training for the first time and wasted no time fitting into his new surroundings and, more importantly, with his new team mates.

Training starts this weekend so it must be the Saturday just gone.:) :) ;)

Well as we have heard time and again from Hearts fans...Levein knows his defenders. I'm sure that if he feels this kid is worth a contract, we will have got ourselves a good defender.

I don't care if they aren't household names. I want footballers at Leicester, not Heat magazine celebs.

COME ON LEICESTER!!!!
