According to the Merc the Gerrbrand deal is still on but hangs in the balance, whatever that means.

Mr Steven, to help answer your question:

Mission to plug the talent drain
By Michael Cockerill
July 9, 2005

Australian youth international Jacob Timpano may become a test case in Football Federation Australia's plans to try to block the exodus of talent and nurture the country's best young players in the new A-League.

The 19-year-old Sydney FC defender is on trial at English Championship club Leicester City, but the FFA is clearly unhappy with the situation and, according to head of operations Matt Carroll, the governing body has the power to stop any proposed transfer.

But Sydney FC believes FIFA's international regulations overrule any objections from the national body.

Timpano left for England last weekend and is the first A-League player to seek an overseas move since the new competition was set up. The A-League will kick off at the end of next month.

"Under our contracting rules with the clubs an early ending of a contract requires our approval, and we have the power to enforce that," Carroll said last night. "We will weigh each case on its merits, but Jacob is exactly the sort of player we want to keep in the A-League, certainly for the first season.

"Our underlying philosophy is to develop Australian talent through the A-League. That is something we espoused to the clubs right from the start. Obviously money talks, unique talent will always go overseas, and players will want to further their ambitions. We understand that.

"But we're also about building a new league, and we don't want the A-League turned into a farm.

"This is not necessarily about Jacob, but if all the clubs start doing is selling players overseas then we won't be happy at all. We want to see our best young players performing in our own competition, at least for a while."

**** that. Surely that isn't fair? If a player wants to leave and the club are willing to let him, then that's bloody stupid if their FA stops the transfer just because they don't want their best players to leave. Hopefully if Levein does want to sign Timpano, FIFA would step in to let it happen.

Dream on. :) :) ;)

"Also, young Swedish defender Peter Gerrbrand has issued an ultimatum to his club Hammarsby that he will join City with or without their agreement on a fee.

The player and the club are at loggerheads over an agreed price tag with Hammarsby apparently moving the goalposts at the last moment, but Gerr-brand is determined to become the next addition to Levein's growing new squad."

Mercury

A player desperate to join us, it's unheard of.
