Hull City 0 - 1 Leicester City
Posted on: Sat 01 Jan 2011
Leicester City battled to a deserved 1-0 victory against Hull City to end their recent run of poor away form. The Foxes earned the win through a well taken Darius Vassell goal in the first-half and in truth they should have gone on to win by more. On a disappointing note, Greg Cunningham appeared to suffer a bad injury in the second-half, for which Liam Rosenior was sent off for the home side.
Manager, Sven-Goran Eriksson made three changes to the side that lost 2-0 at Millwall for today's npower Championship clash against Hull City. In came Chris Weale, Yuki Abe and Darius Vassell for the injured Chris Kirkland, Matt Oakley and Roman Bednar. Oakley and Bednar were both named on the bench, with Andy King named as captain for the game.
The Foxes started brightly at the KC Stadium with Kyle Naughton full of energy down the right-hand side. The on-loan full-back swung an early cross in which was well dealt with by Kamil Zayatte.
In the third minute, Greg Cunningham's intelligent throughball was dummied by Richie Wellens and Darius Vassell found himself with space inside the Hull area. The City striker was blocked of by Ian Ashbee, before curling his shot wide of debutant Brad Guzan's goal.
Then, just a minute later, a surging run from Lloyd Dyer allowed the winger to find Andy King, whose testing shot from outside the area required a solid stop from Guzan.
The Foxes continued to cause havoc, as James Harper fouled Greg Cunningham and the free-kick from Paul Gallagher was flicked on by Vassell, before Michael Morrison's deflected attempt looped over the bar for a corner.
In the tenth minute the Foxes finally got their deserved breakthrough. A superb chipped cross from Richie Wellens was perfectly weighted for Vassell, who volleyed home emphatically to give City the lead, with the striker's powerful shot rattling off the underside of the crossbar.
Goal: Hull 0-1 City (Vassell)
City continued to look dangerous on the break through Vassell and Dyer as the front three adopted by Eriksson and packed with pace was being utilised to decent effect.
In the 19th minute, Hull's first decent spell of pressure resulted in a corner for the home side as Cameron Stewart combined well with Jamie Devitt.
Just two minutes later, a wonderful throughball from Paul Gallagher found Lloyd Dyer in acres of space, but the City attacker hurried his shot with the ball taking an age to settle, to the relief of Hull keeper, Guzan.
The home side struggled to settle in to any kind of groove as the Foxes dominated proceedings at the KC Stadium. That fact was highlighted in the 27th minute when Kamil Zayatte was caught in possession by the alert Vassell, to the general dismay of the home support.
On the half hour mark, with Richie Wellens dictating play and pulling the strings in midfield, Paul Gallagher was allowed the time and space to curl the ball towards goal, but unfortunately for the City frontman, his effort went just past the post.
Hull's brightest moment of the game came from nowhere as Cameron Stewart's exceptional run tested Chris Weale from a tight angle. After the resulting corner in the 32nd minute, Richie Wellens was booked for deliberate obstruction.
In the 36th minute, Jamie Devitt was replaced by new Hull City signing, Aaron McLean as Nigel Pearson made his first change of the day for the Tigers. Good work from Wellens nearly punished Hull just a moment later, as he found Dyer, who curled just wide of Guzan and unluckily just wide of the post as well.
On the brink of the half-time whistle, City controlled possession through Gallagher and Wellens, whilst frustrating the home side who seemed unable to create anything of note.
Half-time: Hull 0-1 City
Hull made their second substitution, introducing the mercurial talents of Jimmy Bullard to the second-half action, replacing skipper, Ian Ashbee.
In the 51st minute, City were a whisker away from making it 2-0. Richie Wellens and Darius Vassell combined with ease down the left-wing, before Wellens laid the ball square to Paul Gallagher. The City star shot rom just outside the area, with the ball flying just inches past the post, with Guzan stranded in the middle of the goal.
A perfectly weighted throughball from Vassell then found Dyer, but the City winger was adjudged to have handled as he controlled the ball, just prior to pulling the trigger.
With little in the way of clear-cut chances, the game hit a frustrating stalemate, with both sides pushing to gain territorial advantage. On the hour mark a long goal-kick from Chris Weale found Darius Vassell who laid the ball off to Greg Cunningham. The City full-back was caught very late by Liam Rosenior with an awful challenge and as Cunningham lay on the ground in pain, Rosenior was sent off by referee Webb.
Sending-off: Hull City, Rosenior, 61mins
After a lengthy delay, Cunningham left the field in visible pain with the thoughts of all City fans with the talented Irish full-back. He was replaced by Bruno Berner in the 67th minute, with Hull also making a change as Jay Simpson was replaced by Paul McShane.
Hull had the ball in the net in the 72nd minute, but it was disallowed for a foul on City keeper, Chris Weale, who was bundled in to the net with the ball. The home side were starting to show signs of getting back in to the match though after the injury break.
In the 77th minute Martyn Waghorn replaced Darius Vassell as Eriksson made his second change of the afternoon.
City continued to hold firm at the back with Michael Morrison and Jack Hobbs putting in a solid defensive display against the mobile and powerful McLean. City's attacking threat diminished slightly as the Foxes looked to ensure they didn't concede a late equaliser.
Consecutive corners for City led to Paul Gallagher nearly fashioning an opportunity at goal in the 85th minute, before Zayatte blocked the City man. The Foxes continued to look dangerous through Waghorn though who showed great energy.
Matt Oakley replaced Lloyd Dyer in the 87th minute as Eriksson made his final change of the afternoon.
With eight minutes of added time announced City knew they would come under pressure, but Chris Weale claimed an inswinging corner with ease in the 90th minute.
Matt Oakley and Martyn Waghorn combined well deep in to added time to retain possession for the Foxes in the final third as Hull frantically tried to pump the ball forward.
Yuki Abe then broke through for City but his pass towards Waghorn was overhit, with the City substitute looking like he would be through on goal in the dying moments. City hung on for a deserved away victory.
