you will have to use itunes, but you can play mp3s through itunes and on your iPod, so no, no conversion would be necessary. All you have to do is add the mp3 files to your itunes library-they will till be in their original place as well as far as i know, so you don't have to listen to them on your pc through itunes if you don't want to.
I will never install itunes. Guess I can't have one then.

I don't get the dislike for itunes, it's a great program.

Just read through the countless threads about iTunes/iPods and you'll understand peoples hatred of it.
The case has been fairly well stated.

pretty much-but if all your going to use it for is to put songs on your ipod touch, whats the problem with having it?
Because if I want to change to another brand one day, I'm concerned that Apple will have fcuked up my files to another format and my record collection is wankered.

I'm not interested in any software that will alter all of my files back again, I have thousands and I don't have the time.

But itunes WON'T **** up all yours files-they will still be in mp3 format so you will be able to use them on any mp3 player-you can just use the itunes programme as your way of getting songs from your pc to your iPod-all your doing is making your songs accesible in itunes, not changing the format.

i got a first for analysing arguements and i feel yours are unfounded.

Then I look forward to you refuting my arguments.

But what if he 'purchases' some new music using iTunes and wants to transfer those tracks to another PC or hard drive?
What will happen in future if he decides to get a different make of MP3 player?

I don't trust Apple, simple as.

I've made that mistake once, I won't make it again.

He can purchase songs from 7Digital in mp3 format (or anywhere else that offers a similar service) instead and avoid any such problems that you discuss.

shit one spelling mistake! undermines my views completely...

So you agree, there are problems with it?

What if he has tracks legally purchased from 7Digital in mp3 format (or anywhere else that offers a similar service) stored on several different PCs or hard drives & wants to transfer a varied selection of them onto his iPod?

Would that be a straightforward, achievable process?

wahey an ipod itunes debate again
