To add to the debate, I have just installed iTunes on my laptop as my media player, and now I am used to it I do quite like!

It has however locked my laptop, and I can only unlock it by plugging in a new iPod. Bit bizzare if you ask me

I've got nothing against Apple and have a Mac, that gets used intermittently, I'm just not a fan of iPods which, imo, are a triumph of design over usability.
Those lovely white headphones are great though aren't they, can't find a pair of them for love nor money though.

I had a play with one of these last night. I must confess to being very impressed with the technology, the feel of it, the graphics etc etc.

Very impressive.

Can it play normal mp3s, uploaded from CD, not using itunes?

Can I just copy a folder from my hard drive, from "My Music" for example, and play it as a std mp3?, or do I need that itunes bollox and transfer all my music into another file format?

you will have to use itunes, but you can play mp3s through itunes and on your iPod, so no, no conversion would be necessary. All you have to do is add the mp3 files to your itunes library-they will till be in their original place as well as far as i know, so you don't have to listen to them on your pc through itunes if you don't want to.
