I'd never seen him play before we signed him and I'm surprised how physical he is and how much he puts himself about despite that injury record.

Gerrimin.

I think he'd be a good player at this level, despite his injury record.

However, £1mil is too much imo.

It makes me wonder what kind of a striker you think we could get for less than £1M.

I just don't want to see us blow most/a large chunk of our transfer budget on one player unless he will really give any promotion bid a huge boost. I can't see Vaughan doing that.

Based on what? 8 goals in 56 league appearances?

No, based on what I've seen when I've seen him play and his appearances in the England Under 21's.

The fact that he played 40 odd times for a premier league side (and a pretty good one) and is still only 21 speaks somewhat to his potential.

From seeing him make 3 brief substitute appearences for the England U21s? I'm not really sure how you can judge him by that to be worth £1mil. I never would be able to. Even Mattock and Jordon Stewart both managed to get caps each for the U21s.

And remember when Francis Jeffers and Luke Chadwick were the next big things of English football? Loads of PL managers give young players who will never go on to make the grade a run out. Remember Steff Oakes, Stuart Campbell, Stuart Wilson etc. all playing in the Premier League for us?

IMO, he is unproven and I'm weary of signing such an injury prone and unproven player for a large fee.

£1m is not a large fee for a striker.

For a Championship team it is.

And what matters is that it would be a large percentage of our own transfer budget spent on one player.

Didn't we sign Hume AND Hammond for about that price? Or am I off my tits and forgetting things

I have been impressed with Vaughan when he has come on. There was a match when Howard played in ther 1st half and Vaughan played in the 2nd - it may have been when Howard was sent off. Anyway I thought he looked far better than Howard that game.
As for his injuries Nigel and his staff will clearly be able to make a better informed decision than we can.
If we are buying Vaughan for £1 million then that finishes any hope of getting Waghorn. However, I would also like to see us borrow that other young Sunderland striker that has been mentioned (I forget his name).
Howard's superb performance against Cardiff suggests that he may still be useful next season provided he is used sparingly.

From what I remember:

Hammond: 270K
Hume: 500K

Also worth remembering that Norwich bought Ricky Lambert for 1 million last summer, the going rate for a decent League 1 striker.

And a few other prices for strikers who have done well in the Championship:

Fraser Campbell, 3.5m rising to 6m depending on goals/appearances
David Nugent 6m

I think 1m for Vaughan is cheap.

Lambert is hardly a decent League One striker. he was a proven goalscoring machine at that level already.

And yes, Nugent and Campbell were proven at Championship level, Vaughan is not. I don't see what your point is.

Vaughan does come with a lot of hype at youth level, yes, but he is unproven at any level professionally, really.

I think my main point is, who could we get as a potentially effective striker at Championship level for 1m? I can't think of any.
