Pearson has been working on a project to develop the squad over seasons, this clearly isn't a kneejerk signing - he sees him as being able to add crucial elements to the squad whether on or off the field.

Tag on that Phillips is a total professional when it comes to the way he conducts himself he's a Pearson signing to a T and will be an excellent role model to younger players.

I'm just worried about what kind of car he has.
Perhaps Spion will find out and tell us, especially if it's a personalised number plate.:icon_bigg

Until the last line of that post I thought we had a doppelganger

Yep, after reading that I'm still of the opinion that I don't want him to get our promotion winning goal should we go up this year.

I just feel that now he is here all we are going to hear about is Kevin Phillips helping to get us promoted and the media will go crazy if/when he gets his first goal which has the potential to alienate the other players.

I just don't want to see him get all the glory as the rest of the squad have worked their arses off for the past 18-months or so and are much more worthy of praise should we go up as opposed to some old timer who arrived for the final few games.

Who gives a crap who gets the goal - as long as we go up.

Agreed (if we do go up this year) but I feel this move has the potential to annoy some other members of the squad.

I know I would be annoyed in my job if someone joined an on-going project for the last 5 mins so to speak and then got all the glory for it.

Well they should consider their profession if that's the case.

You could argue they have history of not being able to get the job done themselves.

I do not think there will any resentment from the other strikers/players. He is quite clearly here as an impact super-sub and from his blog appears to be retiring at the end of the season.

What will afford him legendary status or not, like Les Ferdinand did for us, I think will come down to 2 things:

1) The positive effect he has on the younger players such as Vardy and Schlupp as an experienced model professional.

2) Whether his shots to goals ratio is significantly better than everyone else. You cannot count total number goals as he probably will not get more than 30 minutes a game.

I also hope that Pearson will offer him a coaching role as well. Our management team desperately needs a striker coach with Pearson - defender, Shakespeare - midfielder and Stowell - goalkeeper.

That's a very good point Mike, I bet there are very few teams who employ a 'striking' coach but all (or most) employ a goalkeeping coach.

Both roles are specialist as indeed are defending and midfield players, it does seem somewhat daft not to have a coach teaching the art of attacking play.

Although its not been a problem for the last several games, we've often been frustrated at home by not finishing sides off. Nugent and Vardy are a fabulous partnership that work hard and create for each other but we've lacked a striker that knows his way around the penalty area to poach and snaffle chances for a long time.

I simply have the image in my head of Lloyd skinning right backs to provide his lovely cut backs for K-Phil (that's his street name) to sweep home.

And as has been mentioned, I think he'll have a great influence of Vardy, who lacks exactly what Phillips has. That is providing he's here to be part of the team and not just pick up one last pay package.

When we signed Cottee I was only a young lad and I remember taking his poster from the matchday program and ripping it to shreds whilst declaring that he was "washed up and uselss".

I soon changed my mind! And then 15 years later I excitedly met him at a company convention in West London like a proper little fanboy.

Cottee was 8 years younger than Phillips is when he signed.

True. But Phillips has played in the Prem this season & the Championship last season.Plus he's only here for 4 months. We signed Cottee from the depths of the Malaysian jungle when the rest of football had pretty much forgotten him.Based on that you'd have to say Cottee was the bigger risk.Obviously I wish we'd signed Phillips 10 years ago but I certainly can't see any down side to him being here now & as someone else has said I can't imagine Dyer could wish for a better target in the box.

I am going to play devils advocate here but the mercury mentioned discussions have opened with Lloyd, Kasper and Wes. But not nugent

interesting we now have another striker on the books even if it is short term !

I was just pointing out that comparing the Phillips signing to the Cottee one was pretty lame. You've just given another reason why it is.

Even if it's true I wouldn't read anything into it. They are all key players I think they will try and get them all on new deals at some point soon.
