I had the original kindle fire but wasn't all that impressed, now they've opened up the store in Europe it's probably much better.

What are the cheap android tablets like?

This http://www.mobicity.co.uk/kidigi-7-4-1-super-slim-light-7-inch-android-4-ics-tablet-with-1-5ghz-processor-8gb-storage.html?gclid=CInxt9uVrLMCFbDItAoddiYAMA seems ridiculously cheap. Anyone got any experience with these budget versions?

Got two of these a couple of months back, one for me and one for Mrs Spion as she got jealous when she saw mine!

No problems at all and a 32GB microSD card gives you plenty of onboard storage.

That one's only got 512MB ram, I would recommend getting one with 1GB.

You also need to be aware that some cheap android tablets, although they have access to Google Play, aren't authorised by Google and the licencing system doesn't work. Not a problem if you only use free apps, but a lot of paid apps won't work.

I had a cheap Android tablet, which I thought was pretty good for the money, once I'd installed a better version of Android. Apart from the licence problem mentioned above.

I broke the screen on that though, and that coincided with the big price reduction on the Blackberry Playbook (£129 for the 64GB version, £109 for 16GB), so I bought one of those.
In terms of build quality, speed, screen, battery life, user friendliness etc it's superb. The browser has coped easily with every site I've tried (it runs LCFC Player better than my laptop does). It has nowhere near as many apps available as you can get for Android though (although some Android apps will run on it), and many of the apps are more expensive than the Android equivalent. If you're not bothered about obscure apps and are mainly interested in web browsing and multimedia I don't think you can beat it for the price.

I really wanted something which can present eBooks decently. Can I do that with the Blackberry, Jeff?

I'm really ticked off with trying to peer at them on my phone.

My Tablet has totally replaced my laptop in every single regard.

It's none of those mentioned above so this info is of no use at all.

Have much fun.

If you want an e-reader which extra functionality then the Kindle Fire HD would probably be the best option for you but if you would like a tablet which can install Kindle app on then Nexus 7 would be my advice.

I had a cheapo chinese Ainol Elf (regarded as good at the time) but it wasn't a patch on a big branded one which is why I jumped to the Nexus as soon as that came out. Not so bad if you don't mind spending time flashing custom roms etc but there are always little niggles with them and was definitely poorer build quality with the budget ones though it never stopped working.

Depends on useage and budget really as if you just want an occasional use product then cheapo chinese tab may be your best option but if you want to use it a lot and want a hassle free user experience, stick to the branded products imo.

Is what I'm drawn to.

Biggest problem with Kindle is Amazon are trying to lock you in, the Nexus is far more open but if you are OK with a bit of a walled garden then the Kindle will be OK.

Lock me into what?

I don't buy eBooks or apps but I have a mighty, mighty collection which needs liberating. Whenever I buy books I tend to get them second-hand from Amazon.

They try to lock you into their App Store etc but if you aren't bothered about not having the play store it's not a problem. It should work fine with the collection of ebooks you've already got.

Looks like it's been rooted, so Play access isn't a problem. Android attracts me more than Blackberry too.

whilst we are on the subject, my mum needs to source some tablets/ereaders for the library she works in. They can't use Kindle as Amazon won't let libraries loan kindle books so needs to be something like bluefire reader friendly. Would the Fire be able to download this app, or will the restricted app store not allow it? Is she better going for a Samsung tablet?

The thing I love about Amazon are the comments by products. Having spent an hour reading the one and two star ones I am convinced the product is flawed in concept and implementation. Playbook it is.

Seems all of the flaws I found with the original Fire I bought on release day in the US are still there and they are adding more, however my sister is getting on OK with the unit since I gave it to her after buying a real tablet.
