Leon Best would consider a move to Nottingham Forest as Colin Calderwood looks to persuade Kris Commons to stay at The City Ground.

Southampton striker Best has emerged as a target for Calderwood, having started his career with local rivals Notts County.

He has been offered a new contract by Saints, but the 20-year-old admits he would be tempted by a switch to Forest.

"It is a big club - a massive club - who will be disappointed not to get to the play-off final," Best told the Nottingham Evening Post.

"I know quite a lot of people there. I was at Notts, but I've always liked to watch Forest.

"When I was in the Notts youth side, Forest were in the Premiership, playing big teams, so I always liked to watch their games.

"If they are interested in me I'd be over the moon."

Meanwhile, Forest boss Calderwood is hoping star midfielder Commons accepts the offer of a new contract with the League One club.

Calderwood told the club's official website: "Kris has got a great offer and I would be delighted if he signs.

Looked pants against the sheep in the play off second leg, was constantly offside, made some bad decisions on the ball and scored a rediculous own goal trying to kick it instead of head it when the ball was six feet in the air. Not that i'd judge a player on one game but i don't think he deserves the tag 'wonder kid', and he knows as much about the offside rule as a certain other pacy foward we have

Skysports.com understands Leon Best has knocked back Southampton's offer of a new deal.

Best's present deal expires in the summer and he has rejected Southampton's offer to extend his stay at St Mary's.

The 20-year-old, who helped Southampton reach the play-offs, now looks set to leave the Championship outfit.

The news has alerted several clubs to Best's availability with the striker impressing for Southampton this season.

Leicester are believed to be leading the chase for Best, but could face competition from the likes of Coventry, Stoke and Nottingham Forest for the player's signature.
