We were linked to Slimani in the summer of 2014 and again in January 2015, and in the summer of 2015 before Ranieri became manager.

In the days when our style of play could have suited Slimani, and Vardy was unconvincing, he was considered an option. I read an article where Walsh said that their valuation (of Slimani) at this time was about a third of what we paid for him. It's reasonable to surmise that he was on our radar as an alternative to Ulloa.

So, it wasn't so much that Walsh didn't rate the player, but he was not worth the price Lisbon demanded and, by the time we bought him, our playing style had moved on.

Ranieri demanded another striker when Vardy's position was unclear (Arsenal) and we had European football to prepare for. That was entirely sensible.

The mad bit was picking Slimani and massively overpaying for him. Both Walsh and Ranieri had a role in that but I wouldn't blame either of them in this case. The club were between Head's of Recruitment and just panicked.

Of course we rectified all this the following summer when we signed Iheanacho . . .
