I explained my rationale about Mendy in another thread about him. It really comes down to whether you accept that it is quite common for clubs to deceive fans and media with the real reasons why players are absent. Many, many players and managers have admitted to this. Ranieri admitted to doing it last season.
I think I have a problem with this. Were a player to have had personal issues requiring him to be absent for a few weeks, I don't see that as unreasonable at all. However, it appears to be unacceptable to say so and they have to invent a physical reason and then a manager will vaguely describe the players progress (or lack of it) and potential return date.
If the player wanted his manager and club to create an injury to allow him to deal with things in peace, I'd totally accept this. I just think football generally would benefit from being more grown up about it.
As we've seen with the recent abuse stories, footballers are human beings that can be affected by life just like any of us. I just think that it would benefit the advancement of compassion and understanding if they admitted as much.
What's all this got to do with Mendy you ask? Maybe something. maybe nothing. And that's my point.
