I would say yes - as long as it can be done with some civility. But that was not the case in this instance.
As I travel about the country I am probably one of the most identifiable members of Talking Balls. People often tell me that they lurk and that they would like to join in - the one thing that stops them doing so is their dislike of some of the more uncouth posts and the antagonistic posts from some people - that and their fear of being ridiculed from their very first post. The same names come up time and again and I am asked how I can put up with such attitudes. The kind of posts that we have been seeing recently have an enormous negative impact on the good name of this group.
I don't think there is anything wrong with asking people to be civil.

Just a thought can the mod's/jeff set up a apart of the site up where if peeps have probs with each otheir can get it sorted out away from the rest of us .
this could work by a mod/jeff sending a pm and link and time where it can get sorted a bit like the mods thread which is unseen,with a mod/jeff keeping an eye on whats going on

It's already there - it's the PM system and I am sure that you know about it. If the warring parties need a third person to ensure fair play they can cc the PM to any person that they want to. Not sure that the mods would be keen to get involved in any kind of mediation though; their role is to oversee what is going on onn the public part of the site.

Bit less personal though isn't it? Its quite understandable to see how some could be put off by some peoples (not just melton's) style of posting. I agree that melts goes OTT sometimes, but because i know his style of posting and generally enjoy reading his posts i can brush over them. Heineken Matt is a pain but if your first viewing of the site was in the middle of a HM/MF slanging match then i would probably have reservations about joining too.

Why bother signing up to forum if you believe you may get a load of abuse if you don't conform? Not everyone is quite so robust as yourself nor can everyone be arsed to run the risk of recieving the abuse!

I know what you mean LF, but it still seems strange IMO. Any abuse they cannot handle, they can use the PM system or report the post.
