The Everton signings this season seem as far removed from SW type signings that I can imagine.

Pressure to sign mostly known stars rather than finding and nurturing possible talent?

Maybe SW was better at spotting potential rather than outright current ability.
Agreed.

The very simple fact is that they have failed to replace a goal machine, he was papering over their cracks and now that he isn't there they aren't half the force they were.

Even with the signing of Sigourdson (sp) they will struggle: if they had managed to keep him and sign Siggy they would now probably be top 6 or at least within touching distance.

So many people are promoted beyond their level of ability. Walsh's great strength is in identifying unrecognised talent. I expect several he's taken to Everton are, or will become, good players. But splashing cash apparently for the sake of it and in particular to placate a ravenous owner and manager, is unlikely to end well.

Just look at the players we've signed for big money that were supposedly on his list.

We were ****ing shit for the majority of 14/15. From the Man U result until the escape we were awful. Not having it any other way.

No, no we were rocking along, but beset by terrible bad luck week after week

In fact, we were sodding brilliant - only for the whole thing to be lost because of that complete bastard Ranieri and his one flukey season of nothingness

We were awful to watch. I remember being beyond furious after our capitulation at Villa in the Cup.

Contrary to popular folklore, that was the second match (I think) from that season - after losing with it at Arsenal - where NP experimented with three central defenders. It was really a 5-4-1 formation ('keep it tight lads') and it was horrific viewing. In fact, as his tactical master plan was so ineffective and most of the crowd had nodded off, NP chose to abandon that formation an hour into the game and brought on a striker for a central defender to go back to 4-4-fecking-2.

Of course, Villa then quickly scored twice. To be tactically outwitted by Tim Sherwood takes a special kind of incompetence.

The myth that it was some tactical genius at WBA is somewhat undermined by reality. He had tried and failed miserably with the formation before that day. He then picked a 4-4-fecking-2 at WBA - with for example Vardy on the wing and Mahrez on the bench. He changed it only when De Laet got injured and he hadn't got another right back. Eventually, Mahrez came on and Vardy played as a forward. Then the turnaround happened. Remember the days of Mahrez on the bench and Vardy on the wing?

I have so many memories our NPs tactical incompetence from that season. The similarities to the mistakes being made by Shakespeare are frightening really. They really are two peas in a pod in that respect. He's already benched Mahrez. Look out for Vardy being played wide, as it's bound to come soon.

Laurel and fecking Hardy.

Was it against Hull at home where they went to 10 men and no strikers and so he made a sub to go 3 CB's and we ended up drawing, surprisingly.

Think it was just before someone had to come up with some ideas for him and get us out of the shit.

We hadn't scored for two games prior to that midfield diamond masterpiece so you can hardly blame him for omitting all of our creative players and focussing on shutting up shop.

That was one of the games where Pearson talked about 'fine margins' and he was sort of right, it was only 0-1 but we were absolutely awful, turgid, no imagination, just nothing. Every game around thst time was damage limitation from the start. It was no surprise we went months without winning while barely scoring a goal.

Take nothing away from Nige, he's one of our best ever managers but **** me some of his tactics were an abomination.

So we were ****ing shit when we drew 2-2 at Liverpool due to two dodgy penalties? And ****ing shit when we narrowly lost to Spurs on Boxing Day having dominated them?

A pea, bobbing around on a lake.
