Puel out

Here are some exerts from an article following Southampton's exit from the Europa League under Puel. It does make me wonder whether there is any point even aspiring for a 7th place finish under him.

"Claude Puel made it clear .. he is not a fan of social media and it is a good job for the Frenchman following Southampton's limp exit from the Europa League on Thursday.

For a search of the "saintsfc" hashtag on Twitter would have made grim reading for Puel in the wake of the 1-1 draw at home to Israeli minnows Hapoel Be'er Sheva, which denied his side a place in the knockout stages.

Disgusting, gutless, shameful and boring were just a few of the more polite descriptions fed-up fans used to describe their team's pitiful performance.

Puel's negative, possession-based tactics and his insistence to continually rotate his squad were the main sources of frustration.

...

There is no doubt Puel deserved most of the flack that came his way, especially given his bizarre prematch admission that four months into the season he still does not know what his best team is.

There are other key factors in the former Nice coach's downfall too. Puel's decision to stick two fingers up to captain Fonte in the wake of his Instagram outburst by leaving him on the bench would be applauded if Southampton had gone through, it can now be used as an extra stick to beat him with.

...

Surely Fonte, having led Saints from League One to the Premier League, deserved better than not playing a single minute of their European adventure. While Puel's rotation policy has at times served Saints well as they attempted the difficult task of balancing competing on three fronts it has not helped the coherency of the team.

Had Puel not stubbornly refused to name top-scorer Charlie Austin in his starting lineup in all three of their Europa League away games, which yielded no goals and a single point in Israel, they would most likely have already had their place in the last-32 sewn up without the need for a tense final day showdown.

...

While Austin's nine goals are all that are separating Saints from a grim relegation fight it can be argued he does not provide the same focal point as Italian international Pelle.

“But but but look at where Southampton are now”

A draw at home to a shit club, that sounds familiar.

What's this nonsense about loads of draws? We've drawn 4 out of 21 in the league so far, less than 20% and less than half the number we've won. Only six teams have drawn less than us.

There's no point in being in any extra competition other than the league with Puel.

He's too boring to try and actually win one.

Boring ****er

Don't let the stats get in the way of an incorrect opinion! ;)

Who said anything about loads of draws? It was about drawing at home to shit teams.

Since February we have drawn at home to Stoke, Swansea, Bournemouth, Southampton twice, West Ham and Cardiff.

This season in the league we've drawn twice away and twice at home. How is this unusually bad?
We've got three more points from our away games (from having played one more) but home points aren't better than away points, so why care more about home form when the whole package has us in a pretty good position in the league?

Because home form is a must as at some point you will have a run of adverse away games.

All teams build and bank on home wins -particularly again Nat the poorer teams.

Because a lot of people pay ****ing good money to watch their team play at their home ground. Of course they should care. They have every right to criticise poor management and toothless performances when they are paying far too much for the 'privilege' of watching such dross.

Fully agree - it was amazing to get an away win against Chelsea - but I suspect our 'home' fans would have loved to have seen the same on our own ground. Same with Cardiff - a win and a loss but 3 points is 3 points but would we/they rather have seem them victorious at home or away ? (unless you are one of the travelling fans of course!) as for Newport, it's the magic/curse of the cup, ain't it?

So you're saying that home results should be better than away results? If we'd won one more at home and lost one more away (perhaps by reversing the Cardiff results) we'd have what you want and be in exactly the same position - but I don't believe for one minute that the Puel Out brigade would be happy, and I certainly don't believe that many people really want to see us in the 'excitement' of being in 17th place so long as we were playing a more direct game

And yet so far this season six clubs including LCFC have better away records than home. Last season - just the one - Burnley - by dint of drawing more away than at home. It would be nice for clubs outside the top six to clock up a dozen home wins, but that doesn’t look likely - Brighton and Bournemouth have five we have four.

They are all so piss scared of losing at home that they inevitably play like frightened little rabbits and don't have the bollocks to go and put teams away.

The Premier League is full of dross who are too terrified of losing to go and try winning.

Wank league with lots of teams with wank attitudes.

The top 4 love it because the fear below creates their exclusive little club.

No ****er has learnt a thing from us, including ourselves.

Does my ****ing head in

You on the fence then again?

We are a divided fan base. This thread highlights that issue. There isn’t necessarily a right or a wrong, they’re just people’s opinions. Ultimately, though, a divided fan base is a bad thing, so things cannot continue as they are.
