I thought it started at the death, AD, so why is easter not January 1st?

AD = Anno Domini in the year of the Lord, so officially his birth although most "experts" seem to think it's out anyway.

Having Easter as the beginning of the year would be fun given how much it moves around. I've no idea why it is calculated according to phases of the moon.
 
This year is the earliest Easter can ever be
They've made it earlier this year because Cadburys no longer sponsor Coronation Street and they realise there is no possibility for extended advertising.
