Drive, very violent for US audiences. In the sense, it's very realistic.

I don't think US audiences are any different to UK audiences in what they watch. There is just as big an independent film culture over there, it just doesn't always make it over here without looking.

But that big independent film culture very rarely translates to mainstream success ie. the Oscars. The US audiences are a lot different, films involving graphic sex are given a certificate rating of NC-17. A certificate rating which means no-one 17 or under can watch it might mean nothing but it's a lot more, cinemas have to be licensed in the US to show a NC-17, it severly restricts who can watch your film. So the rating is either appealed or you have to cut your film. Shame is a NC-17, the director for refused to cut it which would be pretty pointless. The same sort of pressure applies to films getting a PG-13 as by achieving that the opportunity to

The US also prefer the violence with loud guns and explosions to dramatise it. When it's a lot more realistic, it's a turn off for US studios and audiences (again forgotten that the mainstream in the US are very straight).

The US audiences and the MPAA are very different in what they want. A lot of people and film makers are against the system but it's impossible to get rid of.

A lot of people is just that, it's not a majority. You have seemingly mistranslated a vocal few in the US as the main cinemagoers over there, it's not. It's the run of the mill folk, the same run of the mill folk who believe Jesus is the answer to life. Only big cities have cinemas which will show NC-17 films, so middle US can only watch certain films.

The same run of the mill folk who will sit down and watch the Oscars. So if it's a taboo subject, it won't win unless it has major coverage at the time ie. Philadelphia = AIDS. If you look at the past ten years, only 'Crash' could be considered a subject which leads to debate but that's fairly relevant of the time.

Film ratings are wrong, it is censorship and evil. That is all.

But which UK independent films have achieved the massive success equivalent to the Oscars? The majority of the UK will only watch the Popcorn films at the cinema.

You are missing my original point which was that Drive/Shame are too much for US audience mainly due to society and enforced certification. Hence they get no Oscar success.

My argument was that not one of the many Americans I know would consider so. I don't think their independent film market is much different to ours, or their cinema going public. They have a corrupt and ridiculous classification board in the way, but those that want to, will get around it and find the films.

Battle Royale - 8/10 - Cracking Japanese film about teenagers forced to battle to the death on island. Not enough bukkake for a Japanese film for me, but excellent none-the-less.

Spent the entire film thinking the nudity must be in the next scene, obviously it never does but it just had that feel to it.

Love this film, thought it was excellent. Apparently Battle Royale 2 is shite though, so you might want to steer clear of that one.

I remember watching this and Dead Man's Shoes in the same night once, amazing films.

I thought, when that kid was offering to take her cherry, we might get some, but nope.

I absolutely hate sex in films. If I want muff I'll watch porn - I don't need porn for prudes halfway through a murder mystery or road flick. It really makes me grr.

The Muppets (the film, before any suggestions), 8.5/10, bloody loved the nostalgia trip.
All the family favourites are back :)

If you don't laugh you have no soul.

I adored the film, the song and dance routines and the gags.
