Southgate resigns

Be careful what you wish for and all that.

I don't understand how people can say that Southgate hasn't been a success. Was he too closely wedded to picking some of his players. Maybe, but show me a successful manager who isn't. He completely transformed the atmosphere around the England team, was willing to pick players from smaller clubs. He might have been a little tactically wanting, but that is also a little overdone - he made some brave decisions at this tournament. I hope that he stays on in some kind of technical capacity.

As for who's next - It's obvious that international football is different to club football. We should take a leaf out of the German and Spanish federations' books and promote internally - either Lee Carsley (u-21s) or Greg Lincoln (u-17s) should be under serious consideration, they've shown they can do it in tournament football. If you really want someone who's shown they can manage a club as well, that bloke who won the u-17s World Cup with England has shown he can do that...

Right time to move on, arguably a bit late though.

He does deserve credit for his record, he didn't pick the teams we faced and we haven't been embarrassed at a major tournament by him which is more than can be said about a lot of England managers.

Cooper desperately needs to get off to a good start as there could be some stupid owners with itchy fingers now Southgate is available and you can imagine our lot would love him for some reason.

It would be nice to see him at Man Utd though, if Pizza Hut don't get in there first.

He absolutely didn't. That's why we lost. Persisting with Kane was stupid. Not starting Palmer was stupid. Not changing shape to match Spain was stupid. Not putting runners in when desperately needed was stupid. Sitting back after equalising, when Spain were on the ropes and Palmer was running the show was irretrievably stupid.

He wasn't brave and he never had been. That's the point and that's why he ends his reign as England manager in exactly the same position as every manager since 1966 with, arguably, the best ever squad and easiest ever tournament runs behind him.

On the flipside: He dropped Maguire, allowing Guehi and Konsa to emerge. He tried different combinations in midfield, and was not afraid to make substitutes at halftime when things weren't working. Maybe he should have played Kane less, but Kane was also tournament joint top scorer. Bringing Palmer on worked against tiring defences, but we cannot be sure that it would have worked from the start. The suggestion that this is England's best ever squad is a product of Premier League marketing, the majority of players are either bit part players at the biggest clubs or come from the likes of Crystal Palace. We were beaten 2-1 by the team which was clearly the best in the tournament, the same scoreline by which France and Germany were also beaten, the notion that the Dutch and Switzerland's golden generation are an easy draw is just daft.

He didn't drop Maguire, Maguire was injured. He would certainly have played as our first choice CB and Captain had he not been. His hand was forced into making the decision to play an actual footballer at the back. Kane being 'top scorer' means nothing, especially as it was shared between about 6 players and only adds up to three goals one of which was a penalty. It was patently obvious to every single person watching, every pundit and no doubt the players around him that he wasn't up to it and should have been dropped but Southgate hadn't the balls to do it. Palmer showed every single time he came on that he could run at defences and make things happen; why must we always wait for these types of players to come on under Southgate. Maddison, Grealish, Palmer, Gordon... Any player who shows any ounce of attacking flair is automatically left out for the likes of Phillips, Henderson, TAA etc... He only made one sub at half-time, once. Every single one of his other substitutions was reactive rather than proactive and that is the sign of a manager who doesn't have a clue how to change a game at the right moment. The fact that he said that we were struggling because we didn't have a 'natural replacement for Phillips (!)' sums up Southgate and his approach to matches.

Thinking that the Dutch team were anything special or that the Swiss are anything other than bang average is a massive part of the problem as is the notion that our squad isn't a million miles better than theirs and most others in Europe including Slovakia's, Slovenia's and Denmark's.

Let's just remember, that this guy couldn't even win the Nations' League but instead we end up relegated to the second tier. Just have a look at that top tier; Poland, Israel, Bosnia, Hungary (who humiliated us), Croatia and even ****ing Scotland, all in League A. We are in the league below these teams now and people still try and tell me Southgate did a good job.

Nah. He really, really didn't.

I remember people saying Sven did a good job , as he got us to 3 successive 1/4 finals.

2 finals, a semi and a 1/4 final are some achievement, however you look at it.

His achievements are good, how he achieved them is the frustrating part, as many believe, with the players at his disposal, more could have been achieved.

I don’t particularly like Adrian Durham, but his after match rant is worth a listen .
The feelings of many England supporters.

[Hope the link works, it’s on you tube, if someone can post it, if it doesn’t]

Yeah I watched that - Durham is usually a complete twatface, but that is spot on

Southgate has pissed away two massive opportunities to win trophies. An abject failure, an FA yes man, and a big nosed ****

**** off

Bet Newcastle are hoping and praying they come in for Eddie Howe

Would save them a bloody fortune from when they sack him later this year

It was the Geermans

The handball that wasn’t given against him
They think they were denied a penalty, so he cost them progressing

Cheerio then sunshine.

Completely talentless manager who will retire having won precisely nothing.

**** all that "so many semis & finals" bollocks. England have had the softest draws imaginable in every tournament under his tenure.

Taking standard of opposition into account they've done more or less the minimum they should have done. Every single time they've played a top level opponent in a tournament, they've lost. Mostly because of his innate cowardice (I refuse to be polite & call it caution like others do)

He can **** off & get some administrative role at the FA for the next 20 years & help fans of some unfortunate club avoid having his useless carcass foisted on them & the inevitable failure that would follow.

Note for the next bloke :

Bellingham & Palmer. You build the team around them for the next decade if you have even a molecule of sense.
Italy, Spain, Germany, Argentina, Portugal, France & Brazil would all do exactly that if they were theirs.
If you have to play some cloggers & assassins between & behind them to make it work then ****ing do it. You ****. Either one of them in the correct formation can win games on their own. In combination they could be almost unstoppable. Don't waste potentially 10 years of top class talent.

Plus : Kane finished the league season with a back injury & CLEARLY hadn't recovered from it. Have the ****ing balls to drop players, whoever they are. You're a manager. Manage. Some other **** can manage PR & fragile egos.

Get the **** on with it.

I'd be surprised if there's a single human being that does.
My sister does. But both he and she are Peterborough fans which probably has something to do with it.

Cooper to leave us for England?
Can’t believe nobody responded to this.

Won’t be beyond the realms of possibility. He’d be more exciting than Potter. Plus he knows the set up and a lot of the players.

Foden, Palmer, Kane, Bellingham, Sako - 150+ goals there. It’s like a bit of a FIFA dream teams of this season. How does a manager not manage to get tonnes of goals out these lot?

Quite simple really, just set up to make sure you don’t cross the half way line towards the opposition goal.
