Paul Jewell is said to be considering a move for Leicester City's highly-rated teenage centre-back Richard Stearman.

Wigan are just one among a number of Premiership clubs running the rule over City's highly-rated teenager Stearman and are understood to be lining up a £500,000 bid for the 18-year-old.

Boss Rob Kelly knows he will have to wheel and deal over the summer to strengthen the side and a substantial bid for the youngster would be hard to turn down.

As Stearman is not out of contract until 2009, they would have to be looking in the order of £2,000,000 for us to be interested, I would hope.

He is most likely going to use this initial bid, as a way of testing the resolve of Leicester, will Jewell be given the ' He is not for sale at any price ' or will the board give Jewell a price that they would consider accepting.

It is game of cat and mouse, he is hardly going to plunder straight in with a bid of 2m, he will test the water and try to guage whether a deal can be reached.

£2 Million and they'll bite hands off.....
Maybe, but I don't think that they'll let any of our promising youngsters go for silly prices, most are tied up on long term deals.

Probably depends on whether their first choice right back (Chim something) decides to leave for another club
If he does leave i would say a bid for Stearman is a probability.
I think Wiganwere desperate when they bid a million for Conners, they are no longer that!

Chimbonda.

I think stearman would prefer to stick around for another season before moving to the premiership. he's not even played in his "proper" position yet.

I don't think Chimbonda is going anywhere, he's only been there one season. If Strearman were to go their, he would be one for the future, and I don't think he'd see much first team action. In terms of his future career, I think he'd be better off with us getting first team experience rather than sat on the subs bench at Wigan.

Won't he have a clause in his contract that allows him to leave for a prem club for £XX, to further his career?:102:

I don't know what your definition of a silly price is; neither do I know what price you would be willing to sell Stearman for. But I do think that the Board would consider £2M to be a good enough offer for them to give his release serious consideration.

Only if we are still using the Harry Bassett manual for contracts. :icon_roll :icon_conf

It is more than likely that Chimbonda will move on, a number of teams are chasing his signature and I would be very surprised if he were to show any kind of loyalty to Wigan.

As for Stearman, his decision may well be influenced by the boards reaction to such interest, were the board to accept a bid it may well change his mindset, or influence him that it is time to leave. He may well be settled now but should anything develop over the summer then I can imagine him becoming unsettled especially if he feels the club are trying to cash in.

Chimbonda was voted into the Premier League team of the season and is on the verge of the French World Cup squad according to some reports so he could well be on his way!

Agreed. Chimbonda isn't going anywhere, he's only been with Wigan for a season. If Stearman were to go to Wigan, it would be as a prospect, and I don't think he would be playing much first team football. He's best off learning his trade here, in the spotlight.

Most unlikely for such a young lad, and it would tie our hands if someone did come in. However, money talks, so I think such a clause it not really necessary. He may well have a clause giving him a cut of any sizeable fee.

Agreed Boc, but this was coming from the initial quote of £500k - as he is tied up to 2009, they would have pay a hell of a lot more.
